This is the worst thing that will happen to any state. Once this colonies have been established coupled with the rate at which they will give birth and multiply in those states and once the colonies can no longer contain their number they will just continue to expand and take more land, when the young grows the parents will simply tell them this is our land and it was given to us by our fathers and no one can take it from us. There is no faster way to islamisation than this. From within, it will happen so fast that the states will not know what hit them.

cattle colonies or ranches are well, but it should not be the duty of governments to establish such ventures for private businessmen.

the cattle rearer should follow the normal protocols of establishing a business such as registration with the appropriate bodies, purchase/lease of the required land from the appropriate owners...

ensure a proper environmental assessment report, subject the business to regular government scrutiny as is applicable to the food industry business & respect the laws of the land...

government can 'assist' by subsidising drugs for livestock generally, empower agricultural research institutes to undertake further studies on livestock feed improvement, promote the development of cattle feed production by private businesses etc...

if government builds cattle colonies, it must be ready to also build chicken colonies, pig colonies, alligator colonies, deer colonies, snake colonies, dog colonies, bush rat colonies & other animal colonies...

the FG & states should not start what they cannot finish...
when CBN rolled out billions to fund farmers and their projects there was no outrage so why the double standard

These cattle colonies sound like grazing reserves to me.the government made some interesting claims though. 90% goats and mutton are raised by herdsmen. If this is true all the main meat groups are raised by them. The last main meat group is pork and poultry.

The government going to subsidize their business. The provide the food and water and pay their fee. It's not clearly stated whether this will end their open grazing. They don't seem to want to end herding.

“We have a population of about 19.7 million cattle and total of 113.8 million sheep and goats. These are animals that graze and 90 per cent of these are owned by the pastoralists.

The minister said that the Federal Government would engage the services of the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) to assist in the production of fodder for cattle.

Billions is loans vs free fodder, free water and facilities fee.

And you think constructing mere cattle ranches will solve the problem. ..this country ehh...who is myetti Allah..who are the real owners of cattle..how do herdsmen get their guns and ammunitions...will justice ever be served in favour of the killed and maimed...how many states are owing salaries and are willing to pay up...

I am sick of this country...a ranch is beyond the shelter or reserve you see...there must be strict penalties for open grazing...the ignorant myetti Allah must call their killer herdsmen to order...government must vet and register herdsmen who are cleared by myetti Allah...I remember when taxis and commercial motorcycles were used to perpetrate heinous crimes as kidnap, ritual killings, armed robbery....a system of identification was put in place for all practitioners and stakeholders...government should start by putting a face to this herdsmen...

In terms of land mass, the North have more land than any other geographic region in this country. This talks of looking for land in other regions to run their private business, sounds to me like some agenda that has nothing to do with raising cattle.

There're some states up North you could travel up to 10 kilometers and you won't see any human, it's all forest and empty land. And it's only in the North you can see such uninhabited land wasting away. How could they be looking for land; when they have more land than anyone else?

because they don't want the cattle ranch system!this system means there is a phasing out of nomadic lifestyle thereby there would be "needs" such as healthcare, education, homes, roads which does not seat well with some people in the north

Good stuff.

States have indicated interest.

In future, we would see many states claiming they were marginalized.

If government has made it a duty to provide incentive for farmers, why not for pastoralists? Are they not Nigerians again? Who is providing the meat you are enjoying in your meals?

where is the incentives for pig farmers

It is a good thing... at least the Fulani's can ranch they way most developed economies do? and since they already have guns, they can also train their ilk in the aspects of "property protection" should any local try to mess with their cows.. or they could gradually build a community capable of doing exactly what ISIS did.. perhaps the Government should take away their guns since they won't be roaming the nation like they do now

Good luck to those states accommodating colony ,I wish they can be so quick in compensating the victims of FULANI attacks
