A Katsina State Magistrates’ Court has remanded five men in the police custody for criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.


The suspects are Dikko Rabo, 30; Haruna Labo, 40; Ibrahim Rabo,20; Badamosi Rabo, 27; and Jibro Dikko, 20, all residents of Gafdama village in the Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.


The presiding magistrate, Hajiya Faleelat Dikko, made the remand order on Thursday after the accused persons were arraigned before her for cognizance.


The police told the court that the accused persons allegedly attacked one Mohammed Abdulsalam with machetes and sticks while returning from the market on January 13, 2018.


The victim was also reportedly robbed of unspecified amount of money during the attack.


Abdulsalam allegedly died from the injuries he sustained in the attack, prompting his friend, Saidu Amadu, to report the incident to the police.


According to the force, Amadu reported that he and the deceased were returning from Charanchi Market on their motorcycle when the accused persons allegedly attacked them along Gidan Kari/Iluki Road.


The prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, said, “The hoodlums cut the said Mohammed Abdulsalam with machetes on his head and robbed him of unspecified amount of money. The victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Dutsinma and later died while on admission.”


He added that “the footprints of the fleeing culprits were traced,followed and led to the house of the accused persons.”


A blood-stained stick, pieces of cloth, cut off from the deceased trousers, a woven cap and a pair of slippers also belonging to him, were reportedly recovered from the accused persons’ house.


Ado told the court that the offence was contrary to sections 6b and 1(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provision Act ,Cap R .11LFN,2004 and Section 221 of the Penal Code.


He stated that investigation was still in progress and pleaded for an adjournment and also requested that the accused be remanded in the police custody.
