Everyone cannot succeed at blogging. Okay, scratch that, let’s put it in another way – blogging is not every one. This may seem unbelievable to many people who believe just anyone can hop on the blogging bandwagon and expect to hit gold. Well, it’s time we all woke up to this harsh reality.

As of 2013, the total number of blogs on the internet was about 152 million. No doubt, that figure would have been doubled by now because WordPress alone boasts of over 75 million websites on its platform! When you add that number to unreleased figures by blogger.com and other platforms, we may have blogs inching towards half a billion or more.

According to a survey by Technorati, 95% of existing blogs are abandoned by their owner and left to lie fallow on the web.

Well, these statistics are not to scare you. They are just to let you see reason why blogging is truly not for everyone. The mere fact that some people succeed in a venture does not mean everyone will succeed. As a matter of fact, succeeding in a venture that is popular can be tasking because the competition is stiff.

Do we have your attention now? Good! Rather than start a blog and quit it in months, how about you discover your chances (or odds) right now? Here are 9 signs you may not succeed at blogging.

1. You’re blogging to make quick cash

Ever since Nigeria’s foremost blogger, Linda Ikeji, showed off her mansion and cars, many Nigerians have rushed into blogging. What many people don’t know is that she was blogging in obscurity for four years without earning a dime!

If your idea of blogging is setting up a blog with blogger.com and then plagiarising posts, and wait for money to just suddenly show up in your account, then you’re in the wrong online business.

2. You’re not a good writer

Writing is a basic requirement for bloggers. If you cannot write your posts, you may need to get a content writer (which is not bad provided you have funds to pay them.)

Millions of blog posts are made each day and you need offer something fresh if you want readers on your blog. You therefore need excellent writing skills through which you can build your own brand online. If writing is not your thing, you need to stay away from blogging.

3. You’re not creative

Have you seen various blogs that look like a clone of another blog? Everything about their design is simply borrowed from another blog.

What they fail to understand is that it would be difficult for them to succeed by hiding in the shadow of others. You need to be creative to come up with your own identity in the blogosphere. If we have one nairaland, then we don’t need a clone because it pointless; instead we need something different or better. If you cannot create your own identity and style, blogging is not for you.

4. You’re not ready to spend on your blog

This is largely common among Nigerians. We want to reap where we did not sow. We want to make money from a system without putting in money. It seldom works that way.

When it comes to blogging, you will need to invest in your blog for things like your logo design, the monthly charges for your email list, your use of plugins etc. In fact, spending on your blog helps you become more serious with it. But if this is too much to ask to you, just stay away from blogging.

5. You’re too lazy to implement promotional strategies

When you set up your blog and start making posts, don’t expect visitors to just show up out of the blues. If you don’t let people know you have a blog, you may not have a single site visitor even if you keep publishing.

You need to attract traffic to the blog and this means you have learn the rudiments of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You need to promote the blog on social media platforms like Google+, Facebook, Twitter etc. In addition, you will need to network with other bloggers, write guest posts and engage in several other promotional strategies.

6. You have no idea how blogging works

The good thing about the internet is that you can get tons of information by a single Google search. Yet, many intending (and existing) bloggers have no clue about the basics of blogging and the latest trends. The funny thing is they still expect to succeed.

If you’re a blogger and you have no idea how it works neither have you exploited the rich resources available on Google, maybe blogging isn’t for you. Nobody runs a successful blog in ignorance.

Blogging is like writing a poem, drama, stories like those days. Don't expect to become a milionaire. You are not being paid for writing... I wonder when people will understand this. Your content is not what's being paid for as such there is so much little one can make!
