Kaduna State government will resolve its dire need for science teachers through a special scheme set up to boost interest in science education, the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Prof. Ezzeldin Mukhtar Abdulrahman, has said.

Speaking in Kaduna Wednesday, while receiving a team from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum secretariat on a peer review tour of the state, led by the forum’s Director General, Mr. Asishana Okauru, Abdulrahman said the state lacked science teachers in its school system.

To underscore the problem, he said: “In Kaduna State currently, we have just three qualified Physics teachers in the whole state. When I mean qualified, that means they have a degree in Physics and also Post-graduate Diploma in Education.”

Abdulrahman said to solve the problem, the state government had set up a special science education scheme in the university under which students are given incentives, including a monthly allowance of N5,000 each, to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English.

According to him, students enrolled in the scheme “are not allowed to fail any exams or have carryovers. If they have carryover, we reduce their N5,000 to N2,500. If they fail, we stop the payment completely.

“If we continue with them for four years, and after that they go for NYSC; when they come back, we give them admission to read Post-graduate Diploma in Education for one year, also sponsored by the state. We pay their school fees and even increase the bursary to N10,000 every month. Once they get the Post-graduate Diploma in Education, then they have become qualified teachers.

“They will be employed in the state Ministry of Education at a higher level – Grade Level 9 or 10.

“We are going to support them for more training programmes and also encourage some of them to do Masters and even PhD.”

Earlier in his speech, Okauru lamented what he called the poor interface between the academia and the real sector in Nigeria, saying, “We should think of how to use the university community to achieve a lot of things.”

Meanwhile, the state has established a bi-lingua boarding primary school for 160 Al-majiris as a pilot scheme meant to gradually wean children off the streets.

“The teachers will include the normal teachers from primary school level and the itinerant Mallams, who are the Koranic teachers who move about with the children,” the Commissioner for Education, Mallam Suleiman Lawal, told the team from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum during a tour of the facility located in Zaria.
