Honestly, I do not seem to buy this idea of jatropha fencing. How do u prevent damage to crops by cattle while the Jatropha grows?

And what is the cost of planting Jatropha round one hectare of farmland?

I've been researching what is currently used in First World countries but no right answers yet.

From my own thinking, getting rocks to surround the farmland looks better but don't know the cost implications.

These Fulani herdsmen are a scourge to agropreneurs.

The fulanis are really a nuisance to agric lovers. No part of Nigeria is safe from this people. At times I wonder what type of people/government we are to allow this things to go on like this.
Cattle does not come close to jatropha even when small. There is a plant one inventor showed me from India which he says deters all animals but refused to tell me its name due to his own reasons.

A Google photo search should give idea of the name. I will search too later.

But what is the cost of a perimeter planting of Jatropha around one hectare? Both seeds and manual labour on average?
Re: Vega F1 Pawpaw Trial In Lokoja, Kogi State by excanny: 2:23pm On Jul 11, 2018
Just wish there was a thread of the various fencing types and their cost implications.

As an intending farmer, the thought of cattle eating up my months of sweat scares the heck outta me.

We should look into

1. Brick/concrete fencing
2. Jatropha/Moringa fencing
3. Barbed wire fencing
4. Electric fencing
5. Stone/rock fencing

I am just reading somewhere that Jatropha fencing isn't very effective. Seems some cattle bypass it.

I have done that and no real name gotten.
Where did you read about jatropha plants been bypassed by cattle?

I love this. just wire with sticks and few trees to hold it against winds. Looks like it will be low cost.

nice one but the problem here is not just about the herdsmen; what about thieves? thieves can easily scale this fence

It might be increased in height. The barbed wire has sharp twist that can tear skin if scaled.

Then again if the area is notorious for theives, a nearby vigilante group with guns might be contracted to ward off thieves, likely towards harvesttime when thefts occur frequently.

If the cost can be managed, I like this solution more than Jatropha trees cos it prevents both cattle and unauthorized persons entering the farmland.

Under 6 months Young pawpaw fruiting

Observation
1. It needs water everyday. The one I have near my overflowing borehole is bigger than the remaining five plants.

2. It's needs a very fertile soil. I have applied moringa fertilizer and also use npk twice.

You cannot use Moringa for fencing. One, you can't plant them too close so there will be gaps and more importantly, animals LOVE eating it. So it will attract them.
Brick/concrete will be too expensive. Only options 3 and 4 are feasible

U can confirm from people who have in their compound, the thing is once it gains weight if cracks the fence from foundation remember the fence is only Made of block apart from the initial cast under

If dwarf pawpaw root is the same as the tall then no reason to fear. It has never affected our fence before or maybe because old man supervise moulding of the fence blocks himself

I don't have accurate figures. The info I will divulge here was given to me by an agric extension worker.

Starts fruiting from 18 months if irrigated

Lifespan of tree is above 50 years.
Cost of seedling is average of N350 per plant.

please I need a little more clarity, you said the ogbono dwarf tree would "Starts fruiting from 18 months if irrigated" and an "Hectare to cover 120 trees and expected to yield upto 25kg/tree after at least five to seven years" my question is when exactly should we expect to begin harvesting? how much do we expect and what frequency would the harvest be?
thanks

As soon as i get my seed i will let you guys know.
I want to keep you updated on my development because i want to take as as a serious business. Any suggestion and constructive criticism is wecome.
I intend to have 300 trees of the dwarf papaya with 1.5 meters spacing between them. I have my farm where i am doing poultry and catfish farming. In the farm i have extra one hectare plus of land where i want to plant the papaya.
However i have not done any soil testing, i want to do it before the seed arrival.
One thing i know about my soil is that some places are clayey and some are very coarse sand. If the soil is somehow not suitable, i want to dig a hole the size of a 25 liters bucket and replace the sand with beter soil for each tree. Since i saw some people planting the papaya in a sack and buckets. But o need your views on that.
Please not that i am a newbie, i just xame to know about this dwarf papaya About 2 montha ago. I picked interest and started researching about them from google. That is how i came to this thread, thanks to the initiator.
Waiting for your responses before the seeds arrive.
