Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri says Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fahola on Thursday “exposed” President Buhari and Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed as liars.

He said Fashola, while trying to defend himself from allegations of ineptitude as regards the epileptic power supply in the country, ended up vindicating both Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP, albeit unintentionally.

Reno noted that at various occasions since coming to power on May 29, 2015, both Buhari “and his lying parrot, Lai Mohammed, have attempted to sell the false narrative that the Jonathan administration and the Peoples Democratic Party, destroyed Nigeria’s economy and handed over a collapsed polity”.

He recalled that on the 14th of August, 2017, Buhari through his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said: “With due respects to the former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, these are the facts about the economy you left behind, in case you have forgotten. I hope this will help to erase the wrong statement credited to you at your party, the PDP Convention at the Eagle Square last weekend that you handed to President Buhari a robustly healthy economy.”

According to Reno, Lai on 26th of January 2018, in an interview with the Sun Newspaper, said as follows: “I think it will be tragedy for this country for PDP to come back because they have not even apologised to the nation for how they had destroyed our economy, destroyed our infrastructure, destroyed our quality, and so far from their campaign, ask them how they will do it better when they get there.”

Continuing, the author pointed out that speaking on February 1, 2018 at a civil society engagement workshop on the Power Sector Recovery Programme in Abuja, Fashola stated as follows: “We hear all our so-called experts who say (non-availability of) power is why the economy of Nigeria is not growing.”

“That is not factual and it is not correct. At the time when we had less power in 2013 and 2014, the economy of this country was growing at seven per cent per annum. We had less power then than we have now, but the economy was growing.”

Reno insisted that the Buhari government cannot suppress “the fact that former President Jonathan developed and grew Nigeria’s economy at an unprecedented and consistent growth rate of over 6% per annum and handed over a thriving economy that was projected by CNNMoney to be the third fastest growing economy in the world when Dr. Jonathan handed over power to President Buhari.”

“Unfortunately, due to the ineptitude of the Buhari administration, a booming economy became an economy in recession in just one year under the All Progressive Congress.

“And this is not the only recent example of the vindication of former President Jonathan by the Buhari administration.

“Only recently, lying Lai Mohammed responded to the letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo by claiming that the Buhari administration had increased the nation’s foreign reserve from the $24 billion it met it to $40 billion.

“The question for Lai Mohammed is this: From who did Buhari inherit the $24 billion? From ghosts? From Killer Fulani herdsmen?

“In light of the vindicating statements by Raji Fashola, I hereby call on both President Muhammadu Buhari and lying Lai Mohammed to tender an unreserved apology to former President Jonathan sad the PDP and to henceforth commit to returning Nigeria’s economy at least to the state that they met it when Dr. Jonathan handed over power to them on May 28, 2015.”

One sided narrative, I used to think the Reno guy had a bit of intelligence. Of course he will make sense to unthinking wails.

What has been proven from events is that Jonathan did little or nothing to induce the 6-7% annual growth rate during his tenure. The growth was largely fueled by sharp and sustained increase in crude oil price. Immediately oil prices crashed mid 2014 to about $80 and to about $70 the growth rate slowed down to less than 3% average for all the quarters since the elections and handover.
But it can hardly be disputed that better public power supply could have taken our growth rate to about 10% during the oil boom years. And this could have served as a buffer to the economy during oil price crash.

After take over by APC oil prices crashed further to as low as $28 plunging the fragile economy and coupled with pipeline attacks we could only export 50% of our production at that time. There's no way the government could have raised money to finance itself and any project or investment. It can only keep afloat by borrowing.

The current recovery is fueled mainly by recovery in oil prices. Plugging of some loopholes and waste also helped

Take away oil from Saudi or UAE and see what is left. Take away revenue from gold south Africa and see the impact. Shutdown manufacturing in India or China and see if they can live with what is left.
The earlier we realise we are still a poor country with a fragile economy susceptible to shocks of commodity price crash the more urgent we will work to truly open up our economy to other sectors not sloganeering or window dressing.

While our economy boomed under Jonathan manufacturing countries like India were groaning under high oil price and slow growth. Immediately oil prices reversed such countries started smiling with high growth while oil producers like Nigeria, Venezuela went into recession. Even resources awash oil exporters with low population in the middle east had to cancel subsidies on fuel, electricity, water and cut a lot of benefits to their citizens.

Learn how the world works, Nigeria does not exist in isolation. Countries with huge populationework to achieve a better standard of living. It doesn't come on a platter.

Until we see our oil earnings as a seed and not a harvest, then we will not have a leader boasting of the number of private jets as signs of economic growth rather the number of new factories and investment will herald our resurgence at this time

Now you agree with my view. Any enlightened leader should be able to diversify their economy and we also know that economies dont turn arround by blame game. The crash of our economy in the last three years was brought about by directionless policy statements and inability to fashion way out.

For Nigeria to grow leadership must be by competence and not solely by the desire to rule. Note the keyword RULE.

So why are we not growing at 7% right now with "all" that is being done to "induce growth", Mr. Pundit?

Subsidy was paid on imported petrol then - Subsidy payment was needless when price of crude was $28.

They said subsidy payments have stopped now. And "technical recovery" is being borne by Nigerians.

Petrol sold for N87/liter then - petrol sells for N145/liter now.

Exchange rate was N187/$1 then - exchange rate is now N306/$1.

Boko Haram was ravaging the North East then - Boko Haram, they said, has been TECHNICALLY defeated.

Also note: The CBN converts the dollar earnings to naira for various Nigerian governments.

$80 at 187 naira = N14,960 (2014)

$28 at 306 naira = N8,568 (worst case)

$70 at 306 naira = N21,420 (from 2017)

And you reasonably expect a country dependent for over 40 years on oil for over 96% of foreign exchange to be diversified in 4 years.

Even if you plant a plot of cocoa or cashew you need about 4-5 years to get to full production. And you must find the funds to invest in the first Instance. People must be trained to handle the investment properly
