Austria to London is a shorter journey.
It's impossible to travel all the way from Nigeria to the USA without oxygen for 16 hours or thereabout.

Stowaway survives flight from Austria to London on Sheikh's jet

The Romanian man was unhurt despite being exposed to temperatures as low as -41C (-42F) during his one hour 40 minute flight from Vienna to London inside the wheel compartment of the privately owned Boeing 747 on Sunday.

It is understood that the 20-year-old, who has not been named, had no idea where the aircraft was heading when he climbed in, in a desperate attempt to find work abroad after failing to get a job in Austria.

But he was dismayed to discover that he had landed in Britain – a country which, as a national of a European Union member state, he would have been entitled to enter legally without having to resort to such extreme measures.

He was arrested at Heathrow airport and cautioned for entering the country without a passport but has now been released, according to Scotland Yard.

Sources said that the Boeing 747 is understood to belong to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

Austrian police disclosed that man told British officers that he had scaled or slipped under the fence leading onto the runway at Vienna’s Schwechat airport and made for the nearest plane, parked near a building site. An investigation into the breach of security is under way.

The aircraft, operated by Dubai Air Wing, the private fleet used by the Dubai royal family, had been sitting, on the apron for three days after flying in from Geneva by the time it took off just after 6.30pm local time on Sunday bound for London.

He was the only passenger on board flight DB001 which was carrying only crew for the short journey.

It is thought that he survived because the plane was forced to fly lower than usual – at about 33,000ft – because of turbulence.

“He must be crazy to do such a dangerous thing,” said Heinz Resch, the Schwechat assistant police chief.

“He told the British police that he didn’t want to stay in Vienna any longer without labour, he was searching for labour anywhere, he didn’t know the route of the aircraft.”

Officers at Heathrow were alerted after he was seen falling out of a cavity I the undercarriage as it landed and was caught by security.

Although he was examined by an ambulance crew he had no signs of injuries and was able to be interviewed by police.

One source said: “He was in remarkably good shape.”

Few stowaways in the undercarriage of aircraft survive the journey. Most are crushed by the wheels as they are raised at take-off while others die from the extreme cold conditions.

It is thought that many of those who do survive do so because they have been protected from the extreme temperatures by falling unconscious.

In 1996 Pardeep Saini, an Indian national survived a 10-hour flight from Delhi to London while his brother Vijay died falling out of the aircraft as it approached Heathrow at Richmond, Surrey.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the last stowaway case in Britain was in July 2009 when a man's body was found in the undercarriage of an aeroplane at Gatwick Airport.

Dubai Air Wing operates a small number of 747s which until recently include a dedicated aircraft for transporting racehorses around the world, fitted with its own stables
