Africans Among World's Most Religious People Study Finds. by mazaje1: 1:45pm On Apr 19, 2010
At least half of all Christians in sub-Saharan Africa believe Jesus will return to Earth in their lifetime -- part of a pattern that indicates the region is among the most religious places in the world, according to a huge new study.

It's not only Christians in Africa who experience their religion passionately, either. Nearly one in three Muslims in the region expect to see the re-establishment of the caliphate -- Islam's golden age -- before they die.

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/04/15/africa.religion/index.html?hpt=Mid

And we wonder why we are the scum of the earth. . . .Other people are thinking about how to travel further into space, develop new methods and see if they can manipulate the human genome, combat global warming and other environmental hazards, Better their economy by laying foundations for economic models that will survive 50 years ahead while half of African Christians and almost half of African Muslims are busy waiting for some imported gods to come and save them from their miseries. . . .Its really pathetic. . . .

More from the studies. . . .

At least three out of 10 people across much of Africa said they have experienced divine healing, seen the devil being driven out of a person or received a direct revelation from God, according to the study by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life in Washington.

What is this . . . .Africans and their endless delusions, Africans are experiencing divine healing yet they are the ones that are dying the most from preventable diseases eh?. . . .Despite their ridiculous claims of "divine healings" Sub Saharan Africans still have the lowest life expectancy. . . .They claim they have seen the devil driven out of a person yet corruption and societal decadence(crime, civil war etc) are very high in sub Saharan Africa. . And what is it with Africans receiving direct revelations from imaginary gods? grin. . . .

"In many countries across the continent, roughly nine in 10 people say religion is very important in their lives," the study found.

Religion is important in their lives little wonder Africans remain the most backward societies in the world. . . . .

That puts even the least religious countries in the region ahead of the United States, which is among the most religious of advanced industrial countries, the study's authors wrote.

For example, only one in five American Christians said they expected to see Jesus return to Earth in their lifetime -- far lower than the African result of more than half -- according to a 2006 Pew survey, which asked a slightly different question.

Even the white people that brought their religions to us are now abandoning these myths in large numbers and embracing other things that will help them and move their societies forward while we are left clutching unto one mythical story or the other. . . .Pathetic. . . .

Muslims have a significantly more positive view of Christians than Christians do of Muslims, the survey suggested.

Some 43 percent of Christians across the region see Muslims as violent, while 20 percent of Muslims see Christians as violent, the study found.

The slaves of allah and their endless violence. . . grin grin. . . .

Half of African Christians and Muslims are waiting for imaginary gods to come save them from their miseries. . . Even the white people that brought those religions to us have almost abandon that thought process. . .

@ OP

what I cannot rationalize is ur attempt to reconcile Africa's religion to its poverty underdevelopment and backwardness.

did religion stop obasanjo from fixing the power sector? or was it religion that stopped yaradua from resigning honourably? why did religion not stop black south africans from fighting apartheid? is the same religion stopping millions of africans in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Sudan, Congo e.t.c from fighting their individually corrupt, greedy and self serving governments.

Mazaje, the least u can do is to be objective. The whites u worship are simply progressing because they have ulterior motives of neo-colonialism. If and when African patriots and intellectuals come to power. . . . .the tide will turn and Africa will rise again.

And guess what . . . .IT is the will of God that Africa rises in this generation to become a super-power.

There is a synergy between belief in myths(Religion) which has a very strong control on the mindset of people and quality of life they posses. . . .

All our societal decadence has DIRECT connections to our overzealous religious practice and beliefs. . . .Our siddon look mentality to our political process is as a result of our religious beliefs. . . .How do you expect Nigerians to aspire for anything good in this life when over 50% of Nigerians believe that Jesus or Mohamed will come and save them from their miseries during their life time?. . .Why fight corrupt authorities when you believe that the world will come to an end during your life time as shown from the research?. . . .By the way the bible and the koran TEACHES people NOT to fight the authorities because according to both books the leaders are giving their power from god and the are to be respected at all times. . . .

I am not worshiping any white man. . .The person that is worshiping a white man and his mythical ideas is YOU. . .Who were those that brought Christianity to you?. . . Whose religion is Christianity?. . .If the white man had not come to Africa I doubt if you will be here defending his ancient myths, As a matter of FACT you are still worshiping the white man's ideas, wishes, fantasies and mythology. . . .The white man is constantly progressing because he has dropped the mythical approach to things and has decided to solve his problems instead of depending on imaginary gods to come to his aid he has decided to use his senses to solve his problem and better his life. . . .

And guess what . . . .IT is the will of God that Africa rises in this generation to become a super-power.

I will LOVE to see Africa become a super power some day but with this mindset of ours it is IMPOSSIBLE. . .You can keep chanting the will of all year long but that it self is another myth. . . .

Brothers and sisters, the white man has brainwashed us black people to fasten our gaze upon a blondhaired, blue-eyed Jesus! We're worshiping a Jesus that doesn't even look like us! . The blond-haired, blue-eyed white man(Arab) has taught you and me to worship a white Jesus, and to shout and sing and pray to this God that's his God, the white man's God. The white man has taught us to shout and sing and pray until we die, to wait until death, for some dreamy heaven-in-the-hereafter, when we're dead, while this white man his his milk and honey in the streets paved with golden dollars here on this earth!

Which poll told you that 50 percent of the cardinals, or Muslims living in Vatican or Dubai believe that Jesus or Mohammad is going to come back during their life time? I repeat the belief that we hold is what is stopping us from moving forward. . .Why would people demand change or make plans for the next 50 years when over 50 percent of them believe that the world will end in their life time?

African's have problems because of the type of believes we hold. . .As long as we keep believing that our problems can only be solved by external and supernatural forces there will be nothing for us. . .Imagine the former president of Nigeria saying that our electricity problems should be left in the hands of god . . .People believe that it is god that will create jobs for them, heal them when they are sick, provide food for them, give them happiness etc. . .Again why would people plan for the next 50 years when some of our leaders also believe that the world is going to end during their life time?

This is rather ridiculous.

The ancient centuries are called dark ages because of the difference and advancement of technology we have now in comparison to then. It has absolutely nothing to do with religious beliefs.
If u claim that religious beliefs have been dumped. . . , how many developed world leaders are atheist? dude, your ignorance stinks.

The advancement in technology and improvement in human life has more to do with the zeal and patriotism and ultimately the need for such development. Africa's socio-economic problems are largely due to corruption, greed, lack of a universal identity and patriotism.

The story is told of an African leading his flock of sheep along a path. Suddenly he came upon a mountain, blocking his way. He quickly knelt down before the mountain, chanted some incantations and proceeded to collect some wood with which he lit a fire. He then tied up his fattest male sheep and burnt it in sacrifice to the mountain.

A white man came along the same road with his sheep and met the same obstacle. He took a good look at the mountain and began to explore it. He began by climbing to its top, finding gold and all sorts of precious things along the way,

The other day I was listening to a serious forum discussion on how to solve the unending crisis in Jos. During the phone-in segment, the first person to call in said the only way forward was prayers and fasting. A well-educated, serious-looking Nigerian woman was asked by a journalist to proffer solutions on the way out of the Israeli-Arab conflict. What did she say? You guessed it - "the only solution is God." I read the sad story of a girl who died of bosom cancer because she was taken to the hospital when the bosom had collapsed. At its early stage when chemotherapy would have been sufficient to take care of it, her people had summoned "men of God" to administer prayers upon her.

Did oyinbos have this problem too? Eric Hobsbawm, the famous British Jewish historian, has no doubt. According to him, Jews began to make outstanding impacts in all disciplines after the 18th century when they freed themselves from the application of Mosaic laws which they hitherto applied to the very last details of their lives. The laws blocked their minds and chained their imagination, threatening to keep them in the era of sea-parting gods. So the Jews' achievements came, not when they were "God's chosen people", but at the time they consciously rejected that identity! Mazaje has already made reference to the Dark Ages, when the Church had the final say on matters and people were being lynched for "witchcraft" all over Europe. Is it a coincidence that the human race has made more progress in the last 100 years than it has since the world began?

Don't assume for a moment that the West is now free of religious crack pots. After September 11, some pastor said it was because the twin towers resembled the Tower of Babel. God had to bring them down! But while you still have these people among oyinbos, they don't do much damage because they appear to be in the minority. So even in the rare case that they occupy responsible positions (like that Pentagon general who said he saw the devil flying over Somalia) there are enough rational people to offset the damage they do.

Here in Africa you find them in every state house and office building. In another thread I made reference to the foolish governor of a troubled state in  the Middle Belt of Nigeria who went to sleep knowing that a community under his watch was going to be attacked that night without doing something concrete to stop it. The following day he woke up and declared three days of prayer and fasting to forestall further occurrences.

How can people make progress who rely on God to work for them? I am sorry to say, but the majority of African people are like children who refuse to deal with the complexity of the world around them, but look to a big daddy up there to take care of things. There can be no grain of doubt that superstition and irrationality sit at the pith of, or, at least, play a large part in Africa's backwardness. It is a sad story.

You are just helplessly dishonest  . . . . . .this is what wikipedia says

The Dark Ages is a term referring to the perceived period of cultural and economic decline and disruption that took place in Western Europe following the decline of the Roman Empire.[1][2] The word is derived from Latin saeculum obscurum (dark age), a phrase first recorded in 1602.[3] The label employs traditional light-versus-darkness imagery to contrast the "darkness" of the period with earlier and later periods of "light". Originally, the term characterized the bulk of the Middle Ages as a period of intellectual darkness between the extinguishing of the light of Rome, and the Renaissance or rebirth from the 14th century onwards.[4] This definition is still found in popular usage,[1][2][5] but increased recognition of the accomplishments of the Middle Ages since the 19th century has led to the label being restricted in application. Today it is frequently applied only to the earlier part of the era, the Early Middle Ages. However, modern scholars who study the era tend to avoid the term altogether for its negative connotations, finding it misleading and inaccurate for any part of the Middle Ages.[6][7]

The concept of a Dark Age originated with the Italian scholar Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca) in the 1330s, and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature.[4][8] Petrarch regarded the post-Roman centuries as "dark" compared to the light of classical antiquity. Later historians expanded the term to refer to the transitional period between Roman times and the High Middle Ages, including not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history, general demographic decline, limited building activity and material cultural achievements in general. Popular culture has further expanded on the term as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness, extending its pejorative use and expanding its scope.
[9]

where EXACTLY in the above quote does wikipedia associate religion to the dark ages?

How many developed country leaders depend on god to help them solve their problems?. . .When was the last time you heard the country of any developed nation praying to god to deliver health care or electricity to its citizens?. . .How many scientist, economist, and government bureaucrats in developed countries say that they expect the world to end during their life time?. . . .

dude, u FRAUDULENTLY  and IGNORANTLY claimed that the west is developing cos it has done away with religion. . .so I am asking u to name any western developed country who is an atheist? . . . . .why cant u name just one?

It seems you have not gotten the point I am making. . . .Why should people be patriotic to their countries when half the people living in it believe that the world is going to end during their life time?. . . .Why tackle corruption in government when you believe that in the world will end in a very short time, why bother?. . .

This is LAME.

This belief is held all over the world. . . .including the middle east, where they are fast developing. The world ending does not exempt believers from a good and healthy living.

How many people in the muslim world have told you that they expect thew world to end during their life time? %0 percent of africans said they expect that to happen during their life time. . .

and did u conduct a survey?

The point I am trying to make is simple we will never develop if we hold unto religious beliefs that make half the people on the continent to believe that the world is going to end during their life time. . . .

MyJoe:

This is FALSE.

How do u explain the fact that the jews still see themselves as God's chosen people even till today? and their belief for the end of the world and the awaiting of a messiah?

How can people make progress who rely on God to work for them? I am sorry to say, but the majority of African people are like children who refuse to deal with the complexity of the world around them, but look to a big daddy up there to take care of things. There can be no grain of doubt that superstition and irrationality sit at the pith of, or, at least, play a large part in Africa's backwardness. It is a sad story.

how does God work? would God go to my farm to plant my crops for me because I believe in Him? . . . . .u speak as if Africans and theists are a bunch of foolish people . . . . ur ignorance is embarrassing.

Horus:

Africans are the world's most brainwashed People.
True that. No wonder nobody reckons with us in this world, as the rest of the modern world always sees us as being part of the problem instead of being part of the solution.

How can we be part of the solution when we have been led to not believe in ourselves to make an impact in this world we live in. What a way to live. We're a great great failure and we know this deep in our subconscious.

No wonder we desperately want this world to end. Because we really can't stand the humiliation of having to continuously stare our collective failures in the face every single day of our lives. No wonder foreign religious doctrines, as an escape route from their miserable failure, appeal to africans so much.

If there is really going to be a world population culling, as has been rumoured for a long time now, africans will most probably be the first to go since we are considered useless to the continual evolution, both spiritually and intellectually, of mankind as a whole.

We contribute next to nothing through our extreme state of mental, intellectual and spiritual enslavement. We have been turned into nothing else but just walking, talking, eating, farking, and reactional biological automatons. What a waste!  undecided

Noetic16, There are orthodox Jews, Hasids and other sects who still see themselves as God's chosen people. There are moderate Jews who don't care much. There are atheist Jews. But the Prime Minister of Israel does not take instructions from a prophet or priest, like King David allegedly did. You are just helplessly dishonest  . . . . . .this is what wikipedia says
where EXACTLY in the above quote does wikipedia associate religion to the dark ages?

Did you bother to read the entire entry on the dark ages from wikipedia or did you just pick out what you wanted to see? . . .Here is it from wikipedia. . . .

Enlightenment

"During the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Age of Enlightenment, many critical thinkers saw religion as antithetical to reason. For them the Middle Ages, or "Age of Faith", was therefore the polar opposite of the Age of Reason.[22] Kant and Voltaire, among others, were vocal in attacking the religiously dominated Middle Ages as a period of social regress, while Gibbon in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire expressed contempt for the "rubbish of the Dark Ages""

dude, u FRAUDULENTLY  and IGNORANTLY claimed that the west is developing cos it has done away with religion. . .so I am asking u to name any western developed country who is an atheist? . . . . .why cant u name just one?

YES the west has developed because it has DUMPED religion and has decided to use reason instead of blind religious mythical narratives and dogma as it source of guiding principle. . . .Which of the leaders of the developed world believes that we are in the end of days?. . .Which leader of the developed world through their actions tells you that he believes in any of the religions Africans believe in? Will president Obama spend or invest almost a trillion dollars into the American health care system if he believes that prayer cures diseases?. . . .Will the developed countries spend trillions of dollars in maintaining the defense apparatus if they believe that God alone protects them?. . . There is a COMPLETE separation of church and state in all developed countries. . . .Why do they allow evolution to be taught in their public schools and not religious studies?. . . . .Why are they spending billions on NASA and ESA trying to find out evidence for the scientific origin of the universe or if intelligent life form exist in other parts of the universe if they truly believe that god created the universe and is only concerned with earth as written in all religious mythical books?

This is LAME.

This belief is held all over the world. . . .including the middle east, where they are fast developing. The world ending does not exempt believers from a good and healthy living.

The belief that the world will end is not a world wide belief. . .It is a belief held by people that subscribe to the Abrahamic faiths. . . .The people of the middle east believe that islam will conquer the world first before it comes to an end. They are more interested in that, hence the need for them to develop themselves and make sure they aid that process and make his happen according to their beliefs. . .Majority of them do not believe that the earth will come to an end during their life times. . . .

and did u conduct a survey?

No, but a survey was conducted on Africans no?. . . .

This is laughable . . . .cos this beliefs are held all over the world. all major world leaders are openly theists . . . so what are u talking about?

They are openly theist but they have learn to drop their theistic beliefs when matters of the state are concerned. . . .The COMPLETE separation of church and state is what has made them to develop. . . .

The only thing stopping Africa from developing is greed, corruption, lack of foresight and poverty.

The ONLY thing stopping africa from developing is our silly and ridiculous beliefs in absolute NONSENSE. . . .Its not just the imported religions and their gods that we too much believe in but also our traditional belief and mentality. . . .African in this age and time still believe that sacrificing the head of an albino to some imaginary indigenous gods will make them rich. . . .There was an Aljazeera documentary that ran last year on this phenomenon in Mali. . . .These ridiculous and obsolete beliefs are prevalent all over Africa. . . How do you expect to build fortune 500 companies when the people truly believe that sacrificing human heads to imaginary gods or demons will make them super rich?. . . .Its always on mythical believe or another from mammy water, to evil spirits to demons etc. . . . .

How do you expect people to have foresight when they believe in various kind of nonsense. . . .Why research on cure to disease when so many people truly believe that some disease are caused by witches and demons and can only be cured by offering prayers to gods or babalawo?. . . .I repeat why spend time fighting corruption when half the people believe that the world is going to end during their life time and they are going to go to an imaginary better place and enjoy forever?. . . . . .

This is both dishonest and dogmatic, mazaje.

1. There were many things that described the dark ages and the dark age was not singularly characterised by religious beliefs but largely by anti-roman-empire criticism. The highlights of the dark-age was NOT religion. . ,  .which is quite contrary to the impression u are attempting to create here.

2. Those who considered religion are antithetical to reason are called free-thinkers. who EXACTLY are free-thinkers? these are persons who analyse issues and bring reasons independent of any religious beliefs . ,   .these dudes are called ATHEISTS in this century. How objective is any reasoning that rules out a possibility? how objective is any attempt to analyse creation and rule out the possibility of a creator?. The goons who came up with the ridiculous assertion that the dark ages are littered with religion are simply atheists . . . . .and their submission was not totally accepted.

3. Religion has continued to influence this world in innumerable ways and is perhaps the most influential subject on the planet today. any attempt to state otherwise is simply dishonest and not objective.

YES the west has developed because it has DUMPED religion and has decided to use reason instead of blind religious mythical narratives and dogma as it source of guiding principle. . . .Which of the leaders of the developed world believes that we are in the end of days?. . .Which leader of the developed world through their actions tells you that he believes in any of the religions Africans believe in? dude, just name ONE western (first world developed nation) leader who is not a theist . . .  .you cannot name any.

1. is the American health care system independent of the knowledge of God? would we have the cures to diseases today without the help  and inspiration of God?. . . , No we definitely would not. I for one, consider it both unfortunate and misinformed for anyone to assume or believe that the scientific community is independent of God. Lets put aside ur hatred and disbelief in God. . . . .if a God indeed created the world, would He be ignorant of the scientific creations of His creations (man)? . . . .I dont think so.

2. The separation of church from state is NOT anti-religion but largely liberalism and a tolerance for the non-religious. has liberalism brought more scientific development to the west than religion has?

3. Evolution is taught in schools because of the liberalism and NOT anti-religion posture of the powers that be. Do not misinterpret liberalism for anti-religion. allowing minority views and opinions a breathing space is not the same as victory for the anti-religion? otherwise, how do u explain the schools who also refuse to teach evolution? or the many holes in evolution?

4. please stop mixing the facts. NASA was primarily set up in 1958 to counter the soveit intelligence in aeronautics and not to proof ur imaginary doctrine that God does not exist.

The belief that the world will end is not a world wide belief. . .It is a belief held by people that subscribe to the Abrahamic faiths. . . .The people of the middle east believe that islam will conquer the world first before it comes to an end. They are more interested in that, hence the need for them to develop themselves and make sure they aid that process and make his happen according to their beliefs. . .Majority of them do not believe that the earth will come to an end during their life times. . . .

EXACTLY the point.

All people around the world believe that the world would end . .  . .and that includes budhists, atheists, hindus and many others.
As such it is ridiculous on the part of anyone to state that this belief is responsible for the poor state of Africa.

No, but a survey was conducted on Africans no?. . . .

why dont u convey a study on Arabs then and find out.

They are openly theist but they have learn to drop their theistic beliefs when matters of the state are concerned. . . .The COMPLETE separation of church and state is what has made them to develop. . . .

how do they drop their theist beliefs when matters of state are concerned? I think u have an exaggerated opinion of atheism.
Strategy, common sense, intelligence and intellectual superiority have ALWAYS been part of the Christian faith . . .perhaps u need to study the lives of Daniel, David, Saul, Esther, Deborah et all to have a gasp on biblical/ Godly intelligence.

2. Africa is not developed because it lacks leaders with foresight and not because of religion.

I will concede that so many historians refer to the dark age differently, as pointed out by the wikipedia entry. . .

3. Religion has continued to influence this world in innumerable ways and is perhaps the most influential subject on the planet today. any attempt to state otherwise is simply dishonest and not objective.

Its possible that religion is one of the most influential subjects on the planet. . .Buts it effect is what we are talkin g about here not its influence. . .

dude, just name ONE western (first world developed nation) leader who is not a theist . . .  .you cannot name any.

What has that got to do with anything?. . . .Do the leaders of the developed world use their theistic beliefs when discharging their duties. . .When last did you hear any leader of the developed world calling on god to help them solve their health care delivery problems or their immigration problems?. . . .

1. is the American health care system independent of the knowledge of God? would we have the cures to diseases today without the help  and inspiration of God?. . . , No we definitely would not.

1. when Christianity was brought into Africa, Africans were NOT developed, that explains why they were used as slaves. Those who brought Christianity to Africa were far more deveoped than Africa, that explains why they had a need for slaves.

Africans had not developed at that time because their beliefs inhibited their development. . . .When the white people were busy developing space telescopes and discovery the cause and cure for diseases our ancestors were busy banishing people into the evil forest or sacrificing humans and animals to one god or the other. . . . .

2. Africa is not developed because it lacks leaders with foresight and not because of religion.
