We have already had him - he is General Buhari 1983 - 1985 He was the inspiration for Jerry Rawlings himself.
check out his actions in his brief  20 month tenure:

Arrest and imprisonment of over 500 corrupt Politicians, officials and businessmen.

Genuine attempt to recover stolen loot , to the extent they were locked up until the started coughing up the loot.

He even kidnapped Shagari's Defence Minister Ummuru Dikko from his london hideaway and put him in a cargo crate before the British authority discovered and rescued him.

He stood up to western creditor banks by refusing to honour dodgy / fraudulent invoices.

He refused to sign up for IMF loan agreement that would have been detrimental to Nigeria and held out for a better deal.

He was tough on drug- trafficking

He was tough on Armed robbery and crime

He was tough on indiscipline - streets and yards had to be cleaned every weekend, we were made to form orderly queues etc.

He significantly reduced Nigeria's national debt.

Whats more the when he was overthrown we still had good electricity and still had a national airline.

It says a great deal about the man that he is the only former leader living relatively modestly.

I would be very happy to see Buhari lead again - he has been tried and tested and proven to have zero-tolerance for corruption and would be the medicine our corrupt nation needs right now!

Why do you think the theiving corrupt OBJ did everything in his power to stop Buhari being elected in 2007? angry

If you talk to some Ghanians, Rawlings was not a good leader, jailed and killed many of the people he didn't like. All those accomplishment attributed to Buhari is better attributable to Idiagbon, he was the force behind the Head of State, it was when he left town that a coup took place

The man at top always deserves credit as he has to have the foresight and judgement to appoint the right team.
And the team have to follow his vision.

Just in the same way as he would be accountable for any failings.

In any case I do not agree with your assertion.

We don't need a 'rawlings'. We just need someone to prosecute the Halliburton case. That will go a long way to fight corruption.

@GenBuhari
True that Buhari was at the top, at that time however, everybody was fearfull of Idiagbon more than Buhari, the Head of State was more of a figure head. Have you thought about why it was until Idiagbon was out of the country when the coup took place if Buhari was truly in charge?

It will be very difficult for Nigeria to succeed the Rawling style. Recall that as far back as 1966, Major Nzeogwu and co tried it and there was complete betrayal on the part of some of his fellow officers. So, if the military at that time referred to as professional soldiers could sabotage the act, is it now that we have politicians in uniform that it will work? I doubt.

The best option is to legally pursue the criminals. EFCC should be able to bark and bite.

@safariman
I beg to differ, that may have been your perception, because probably Idiagbon made media announcement about "war against indiscipline" etc.
The leader Buhari  deserves full credit for the achievements of his government.

Do you think Gerry Rawlings personally arrested and executed all corrupt politicians? No he can't do it - his role was to assign the role to effective and competent  people and then ensure the tasks are done. Buhari had to delegate as well, but he was ultimately in charge; even Idiagbon would have had to delegate responsibility to effective competent subordinates.

Leadership is most important as you could imagine that someone like Idiagbon would have been completely effective in the same role if he had a corrupt leader such as OBJ or IBB.

Buhari is of high integrity and non-corrupt himself and he chose  a team able to implement his vision.
It is the job of a good leader to choose the correct person for the job and ensure they fulfill the job assigned to them.

The fact that coup happened whilst Idiagbon was out of the country does not prove your point, IBB was probably waiting for either Buhari or Idiagbon to be out of the country before his coup.

We have already had such a leader - General Buhari 1983-85, He was Rawling's inspiration.

Why are we celebrating a murder like JJ RAWLINGs?

Wasting (innocent) blood- especially those not convicted of any court of law doesnt make any country better. Am not moved by the temporal success Ghana seem to be enjoy. Its relative.

Ghana still lack strong institutions. Thus, its only kids that will rejoice at such success not backed by strong institutions.

We need somebody that has the interest of the nation at heart. Someone who can cripple corruption.

The truth is if Jerry Rawlings was in Nigeria he wld hav failed, our culture is one dat allows a wrongdoer to be pardoned nd whoeva seeks his full punishment as wicked and Buhari was our Rawlings infact Rawlings was inspired by him nd learnt lessons frm d way Buhari was treated dat was y he was more brutal. The corruption in dis country does it follow any process, so y do we nid proceses 2 stamp it out, even a Buhari as president wld not c a toothless EFCC nd let dem b he cld give them teeth without due process nd use d teeth 2 throw 2/3rds of d senators to jail b4 a new set witout corrupt tendencies come 2 legalise d actions but trust Nigerians we wld hav bin cryin wolf @ dat time.

If only our laws could be allowed to work effectively, things would straighten up. We are looking for a leader who will make our laws effective.
