The only thing that is backward is you speaking English when you have your own language and not under colonization. You can always have a Yoruba interpreter with you at the meeting to explain what is going on. Or you can go back to your state, it's simple. We can only dream in our language like someone said. texazzpete: 13 Likes 1 Share |

PrecisionFx:Wrong! When Anambra enacted similar laws making the teaching and studying of Igbo compulsory in state-owned primary and secondary schools, how many tribes complained? In fact, any student who failed to pass Igbo was denied promotion to the next class. Why are you now wailing just because Lagos has done something similar, and widened the scope to include its state-owned tertiary institutions? A credit pass in Yoruba language at SSCE level or NECO, is simply needed to gain admission into the institution. The language will not be used as a method of instruction within those tertiary institutions, so why this stress? 15 Likes |

Adebowale89: And that is what I said - that I support this measure very strongly at basic education level through primary and secondary school. That is the place for acquiring language skills. At tertiary level, except one is studying a language itself or except one day, we start teaching courses in our indigenous languages, it's a waste of a student's time making him take language courses. You're comparing the East to Lagos, which isn't a fair comparison. I'm sure in Ekiti or Ondo, Yoruba is the dominant language as Igbo is in Ebonyi or Abia. Lagos is a cosmopolitan city which might be Yoruba dominated, but has a national character and flair. It's interesting that no other state, including the other 5 Yoruba states, ever felt the need to pass this measure, but the Lagos State House did. It seems it is motivated more out of hubris and arrogance and a need to feel relevant than trying to somehow promote the language. Be honest, can you imagine there being some kind of scheme in Abuja where admission or even employment into government institutions requires working knowledge of the Gwari language? |

zoedew: French is the official language of the enclave of Quebec. the vast majority of residents in Quebec are french speaking. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Language_Act_(Quebec) your analogy is not apt, as English remains the official language in ALL territories in Nigeria. |

PrecisionFx:The same federal ministry of education did not stop Anambra state for making the studying and teaching of Igbo language compulsory in its state-owned schools. So why should it stop Lagos for doing the same, and asking that students who wish to attend Lagos state-owned tertiary institutions should do the same? 10 Likes |

ycat: 1. Let me correct this impression. This law is highly unlikely to affect me personally. My university days are long over (and certainly I'd have never gone to any of the provincial tertiary schools in Lagos). I also have limited exposure to Govt agencies. I am merely speaking out against what I perceive to be a misguided law. 2. Any development that could not have been achieved while speaking English...e no go work with Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa languages. 2 Likes |

Obi1kenobi: I spent good 6yrs in Ekiti and the samething was applicable in Ekiti corporate organization wetin dey pain u now is what I don't understand. your case be like a player that referee give yellow card and he still going to explain to the ref this law had been on debate for a while, now it had been passed. Lagos is a Yoruba land geographically or politically as you may put it, they're entitled to any decision they take. should we scrap our culture, custom and law because we have non Yoruba settlers here? 12 Likes 2 Shares |

PrecisionFx:No sir, the only land grabber on this thread is you! That is why you feel so pained by the fact that Lagos state has enacted this law. Try not to kill yourself. In this case, the federal govt laws on education will only apply to federal govt tertiary institutions, and not to Lagos state owned institutions. Take panadol for your headache 12 Likes 3 Shares |

daywatcher: Lagos is not ethnically homogeneous. It is dominated by an indigenous ethnic group. But, it isn't ethnically homogeneous. If I were to make the kindest, most generous estimate, I'd say at best, Yorubas are about 65% of the Lagos population. But I'd wager they're less than that. And no one said what the LASG are doing is "illegal". Legality isn't synonymous with rightness. |

Stingman:The only coward here is you....because you feel threatened by a state house of assembly passing a law that a credit pass in the indigenous language called Yoruba, is needed for admission into their state-owned schools. As for supporting Odua state, I am sure that is a subject for Odua people and not me. I do not support disintegration, because there is no proof that it would improve the fortunes of this nation. The only thing people should be pushing for is true federalism, not disintegration. If you do not agree with me, I really do not care. I am entitled to my opinion, the same way you are free to hold fast to your own belief. A million insults or mocking comments from the likes of you, will not change my stand. 7 Likes 1 Share |

LaudableXX: I never heard about such a law and even if they enacted it, Its dead long before it arrives. It might be something that happened maybe 10 years ago n was never enforced because it is IMPOSSIBLE. No state in Nigeria can "force" anyone to read a local language before they are allowed to graduate or allowed to gain admission. Such a law has never seen the light of the day in Nigeria and it will remain like that. Besides if such a law was legal and was announced, Its Igbo land so it is justifiable . Lagos is not Yoruba land so the Afonjas have no ground to enact such law. |
