Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to review the salaries of members of the National Assembly and ministers, with a view to creating more jobs for Nigerian unemployed youths.

According to Guardian, he said this yesterday while urging political office holders to make sacrifices and salvage the country from its current economic downturn.

He argued that if the salary of each member of the National Assembly was divided into two, it would go a long way to provide more jobs for 70,400 jobless Nigerians at between N90, 000 and N92, 500 monthly salary.

Sanusi gave the charge through a statement addressed to President Buhari, while also lamenting that the salary of military personnel, who are defending the country was only N49, 000 with some of them lacking accommodation.

He said: “Where is the change? Change should start with the National Assembly. A senator receives N36million monthly. If this is divided into two, it comes to N18 million.

The second half of N18 million can be used to create jobs for 200 Nigerians, each earning N90, 000 monthly, When you multiply 200 people by 109 senators, this will give 21,800 Nigerians gainful employment.

In short, 200 Nigerians will be able to live a comfortable life on half a senator’s monthly salary.”

Further highlighting the disparity in the standard of living of public office holders, particularly the legislators, Sanusi argued that a member of the House of Representatives receives N25million monthly.

“Half of that amount is N12.5million, which is enough to employ 135 Nigerians with a monthly salary of N92, 500 each.

I, with every life in my body support this proposal.

The National Assembly members don't represent Nigerians. They are self-serving. Every representative that has ever been there from 1999 to date has served their own will.

The review of public servants salaries and allowances is long overdue. We keep deceiving ourselves about fiscal discipline but not strong enough to take the right decision.

Sanusi is just playing to the gallery.
What is needed is to benchmark public servants’ salaries and pensions to that of their civil servant counterparts working for the same government.
Anything else is simply cosmetic by rogues like Sanusi who stole money in CBN and in the Kano Emirate Council.

Anyone expecting Sanusi or any of the ruling elite to give up the slightest advantage without extreme pressure from the people is in lala land of hopeless dreamers.

often ask myself if a minister or governor ,or any public office holder is told to work on volunteering without been paid any salaries, would they still come forward and claim to want to serve ?
