Is This Wax Or Ankara? by madlady(f): 3:53pm On Apr 23, 2010 |
Hi, can anyone tell me if this is WAX or ANKARA? I always get a few of my designs made up for summer wear. I make them in what I call WAX, I've been told that it's called ANKARA. Is their any difference? Please excuse the messy pics , I took a quick snap in the dressmaker's corner (rushing to get back to work). 1 Like |

@FABRIC looks to me like 'nichem wax'. this is definately not 'london wax'. forget abt the 'wax' attached to the brand names. it is ankara. nice outfit. what part of UK is your tailor based? |

platinumnk: It's a light weight spring coat, made from a dress fabric. Lots of them around this year. I designed mine with a very full bottom so that I can wear it on it's own like a dress. funkybaby: Thank you for your reply. So you have different types of "wax" I just buy the 5/6 yards of the wax fabric . So this IS "ANKARA". The dressmaker lives in South London. Thank you very much . 1 Like |

madlady: you're welcome yes, there are different types of 'wax' depends on the company that made it and the source. that said, they are all ankara. ok@south london how much does she charge averagely? for example, to sew a gown |

funkybaby: So they are all "ANKARA" that's good to know Well I only have my own designs made up, but that mac cost £90.00 (minus the fabric). When you say gown, do you mean full length? You could put a pic of what you mean on this thread, I would then ask her. |
Re: Is This Wax Or Ankara? by funkybaby(f): 7:49pm On Apr 23, 2010 |
madlady: Yeah, full length but prolly 'tube' gown or i will go for a creative skirt and blouse i will search the internet later for styles and post them or do you have any to share |

funkybaby: I would love you to show me the latest styles in "ANKARA" I only design European styles , so I would love to see Nigerian styles (latest) When you say "tube" do mean straight? Could you also show me the different types of "wax" London and any other. You have been a great help. I love the fabrics but I do not know the "new" fabrics and styles. I have just recently come across yearly catalogues which show wax fabrics, I think they are called "VLISCO". Do you know any better source? I normal buy wax fabric by eye and not by what are the latest out. Your take on this would be a great help. |

Yeah big sys, funkylady is very right. They are several types of waxes but they all sum up as ANKARA. Just like you have diff types of schools but they all sum up as educational institutions.lol. |

baybbootz: Ohhhhh my darling @babysis thank you. I have been buying the stuff for years, but it's my real sis-law who's just informed that's it's "Ankara" I still prefer the stuff I bought when I was 20 or so,I think they were even hand dyed in Nigeria (the prints looked a bit fuzzy) They looked like "art work". Have you ever seen something called "embossed Ankara"? Is it out of date? (I am 30 and tiny bit ) so I cannot tell.

Re: Is This Wax Or Ankara? by madlady(f): 3:55pm On Apr 25, 2010 |
baybbootz: A BIG THANK YOU. Honey pls could you ask your mother if the batik is on wax fabric that can be made into clothing. I have batik art, some I made myself but it looks different from the old wax fabric that we made into clothing. If by any chance your mother would allow you take a pic of any she owns, I will give you your weight in gold But if not I will follow up this lead you have just given me. LOVE YOU |

^^^ She says the batik is made on fabric that can me made into clothing.the fabric the batik is made on is almost the same thing used to make wax. I think the difference between the batik art you made and the 1 ur mum found is the level of expertise and the material. She dsnt have anymore, but she says the amount of batik made is not like before, and that it is almost only found in abeokuta now. What is being made these days is TIE AND DYE. If you are really in need of the batik, i think u should just ask some nigerians-esp yorubas- in the uk,if u have any fwens from there.they should be in a better place to help you get it straight without too much expenses. |
