UTME: JAMB Pegs Cut-off Mark At 180 Across Board

By Innocent Oweh Correspondent, Abuja

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday released the cut-off mark for admission into all cadres of tertiary institutions in the country, pegging the figure at 180 across board.

Federal Government also directed the board to produce data on states that are educationally less developed with a view to easily identifying them and according high priority to them.

Minister of Education, Ruqqayatu Rufai, said these on Thursday at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission (NUC) during the first Combined Policy Committee meeting on admission to degree awarding institutions.

She urged the institutional heads to adhere strictly to guidelines, particularly on issues relating to merit, quota system, educationally less developed states and catchment areas.

“In Nigeria’s quest to build the human capital for an industrial and knowledge based economy, we must not forget the carrying capacity of our institutions as pronounced by the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

“Special attention should be given to the 60:40 science/arts ratio (for the universities and colleges of education), 70:30 technology/non technology ratio (for polytechnics and specialised institutions).

“We have met with the vice chancellors, rectors and provosts, and discussed the issue of the cut-off mark for this year’s UTME and then we agreed on 180 as cut-off mark; since it is a unified examination we agreed that it is uniformed for polytechnics, colleges of education as well as universities,” Rufai said.

Chairman, Governing Board of JAMB, Sam Ukpabi, in his remarks, argued that the UTME, a new examination system introduced by the board, has come to stay.

While a total of 200 visually impaired candidates sat for the exams, 197 prisoners from mainly Kaduna State and Ikoyi Prison in Lagos State sat for the 2011 UTME exams. Imo State has highest number of applicants in the exams as the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, got the least applicant.

Prof Ojerinde asked candidates who sat for the examination to check their results on-line using JAMB scratch cards.

Ojerinde who said the results were posted on-line by 12.00 pm (today)Friday, said, the results are on the internet, as I am speaking with you. He advised that, “candidates do not need to buy any scratch card, but can utilize the scratch card earlier used during registration for the exam.
