According to the data released by the NBS, there are over 72,000 inmates in Nigeria's prisons. This is quite unfortunate as the total capacity of all 240 prisons in Nigeria is just about 50,000.

Here are some other interesting statistics:
- 5 out of every 10 prisoner is a Muslim.

- 98% of prison inmates are men.

- Top 3 crimes committed by prisoners:
(1) Stealing
(2) Robbery
(3) Assault

- Top 5 States with most inmates:
(1) Lagos
(2) Rivers
(3) Kano
(4) Delta
(5) Ogun

- Most Common Age of Prisoners: 26-50yrs

Ordinarily, the North should be having the highest concentration of prisoners but the police force there is ineffectual. Their "area boys"can chase policemen off, even if policemen were with rifles and the "area boys" have no arms. That's why it's almost impossible to see a southerner or Christian serving as police commissioner over there. Hahaha....he will be just a sissy. Kai...let me not say too much lipsrsealed

wow...what an interesting statistic! our judiciary should really sit tight and look for a way out of the rot in the system: justice delivery is way too slow and unacceptable. Justice delayed is justice denied; 67% for awaiting trial is just too outragious....no wonder our prisons are mostly overcrowded leading to poor treatment of prisoners.

As expected

(2) Robbery
(3) Assault
Reason = Poverty.
Most remain in prison not simply because
(1) they cannot afford a good lawyer or are
(2) They are unable to fund appeal or
(3) they are too poor to pay fines.

- Top 5 States with most inmates:
(1) Lagos
(2) Rivers
(3) Kano
(4) Delta
(5) Ogun
Not surprised

The federal government should consider deregulating prison services in Nigeria. Private companies should be allowed to build and maintain prisons and be reimbursed based on the capacity and quality of the prisons. They would more importantly work under the laws and policies of the government. This would lead to de-congestion and improvement of the quality of life for these prisoners

You mean we should allow people to make profit from prisoners as they do in the US? Where do you think the profit will come from if not from govt? Or you mean prisoners should pay for being in prison?
Also don't complain when you hear prison administrators bribe judges to send convicts to long prison terms and refuse people undergoing trials bail. In fact, if you privatise prison, expect prison population to increase dramatically
