You mean we should allow people to make profit from prisoners as they do in the US? Where do you think the profit will come from if not from govt? Or you mean prisoners should pay for being in prison?
Also don't complain when you hear prison administrators bribe judges to send convicts to long prison terms and refuse people undergoing trials bail. In fact, if you privatise prison, expect prison population to increase dramatically

The prisoners are not paying for the services, the cost rests on the federal government through reimbursement. Reimbursement would be hinged on the quality of services provided. The federal government budgets for the prisons, however, it is obvious from the state of our prisons that allocations are being siphoned. The same way we de-regulated the telecommunication industry and witnessed significant increase in quality and cost, we can do the same with our prisons.

My brother, bribery in the Judiciary is nothing new, the priority here is to improve the quality of life in our prisons. The Judiciary is massively corrupt, many of our judges and lawyers are responsible for the sorry state of our prisons especially with regards to the congestion. Furthermore, some of the laws and penalties for crime need to be reviewed and amended because they also promote congestion.

We can not continue to rely on corrupt administrators who are supposed to protect and properly utilize the resources of the country. Nigeria is not a socialist or communist nation, consequently, deregulation should be an option.

98% of criminals are males between the ages of 26-50?

Why won't there be husband scarcity?

The husband materials are in prison for petty crimes

What a pity!

Ordinarily, the North should be having the highest concentration of prisoners but the police force there is ineffectual. Their "area boys"can chase policemen off, even if policemen were with rifles and the "area boys" have no arms. Go and investigate how well the prison system works in US before advocating same for Nigeria.
Cost will dramatically increase. Or you mean you want to privatise and reduce cost?
So as long as the quality of lives of prisoners improves it doesn't matter if people who are not supposed to be in prison are?
You can't use the telecom industry as example in this case as there is only one customer, the FG. Administrators will be hired and fired only on the basis of whose godfather is in power.

You should be the one spending more time in research and investigation because research show that private prisons in the United States are less expensive than their public counter parts.

Private prisons are seen as a necessary supplement to public ones in the crisis of prison overcrowding. Private prisons allow the government to speed up the process of building a prison because the legislators do not have to authorize bonds (Camp & Gaes, 2002).

The free market and increase of market competition help lower the prison cost while increasing the quality of services and facilities (Perrone & Pratt, 2003).

Private prisons are able to reducing “red tape” costs to complete simple tasks such as hiring and firing staff and purchasing equipment (Perrone & Pratt, 2003).

The per diem is cheaper by $3.40 for private privates (Perrone & Pratt, 2003).

How much does the Nigerian government budget for prisons? how much of the allocation is actually utilized and how much is siphoned? Do you mean prisoners who are packed like worms in a small room don't deserve better because they are convicted? or in some instance awaiting trial? This is not about increase in cost, it more about efficient utilization of resources allocated. Until there is an expansive reform in the judiciary especially with some of our laws, prison congestion would be inevitable and would not be changing anytime soon because of the despicable level of corruption in Nigeria. Until that changes, we need to change the plight of prisoners in Nigeria.

Do you have any understanding of what reimbursement means and that the government can create terms of reimbursement?

Incomplete statistics... Where is the statistics for suspects awaiting trial and those convicted?? Maybe my guess would have awaiting trial at over 40% which is a clear indication of a bad judicial system..

This does not apply to Nigeria. So weak argument.

The free market and increase of market competition help lower the prison cost while increasing the quality of services and facilities (Perrone & Pratt, 2003).

Free market in Nigeria? For anything that involve? Please be serious. Has any facilities we concessions in Nigeria been effectively managed? Are costs at our ports lower now? Are the qualities of services better? Are the facilities better? What if the airport? What of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway?

Do you have any understanding of what reimbursement means and that the government can create terms of reimbursement?

I work as a facilities manager. So I do know, thank you.

You have also not addressed my fear that more people that shouldn't be in prison will find themselves in prison. Privatizing prisons will surely lead to that overcrowding you want to solve. The solution to our overcrowded prisons is improving our justice system. Let's judges hear a case from beginning to the end, give judgement before moving to another case. No adjournment. That is what we should copy from US. Most defendants should be on bail before the start of their case except in cases the punishment is life imprisonment or death.

Also, those researches are more than 10 years old. No recent research to site? Are things the same now since then?
