i still see the former coup plotter as a fellow in prisons at hague for his crimes against humanity especially in case of asaba massacre.


here on nairaland i see him revered by some individuals as one of Nigeria's best leaders, considering how much little he stayed in power what could he had achieved?

brethren, if you think he's by far one of the most successful Nigerian presidents, can you willfully step out to convince us to your opinion?

The fact that a genocidal criminal and mass-murderer like Murtala Mohammed found his way to a place of honour on the N20 Naira note is a thing of shame.

What sort of country will honour a terrorist, war criminal, coup plotter and mass-murderer on its currency?

It can only be Nigeria!

To start writting about Murtala Mohammeds many crimes that he commited througout his Military career will take a long time but I will mention just 3

1) Led the bloodiest military coup in Nigerias history were over 300 officers were mudered mainly based on ethnic sentiments

2) Superviced the Asaba massacre where over 1000 civilians, men, women children were gunned down for nothing.

3)Two men who served with Murtala Mohamned during the war, General Ishola williams and General Alani Akirinade, have both testified in the past that Murtala Mohammed routinely ordered the execution of all prisoners of war captured by his command. This is a serious war crime. Thankfully, Ishola Williams and Akirinade are still alive.

General Murtala Mohammed is a perfect example of the decay called Nigeria. A situation where a genocidal killer, war criminal, coup plotter and a failed Soldier is made a national hero

Murtala is considered one of the "best" simply because he died very shortly after taking power, well before his reputation could be punctured by the usual issues of incompetence, tribalism and venality that have destroyed the reputations of all of Nigeria's other leaders over time; all of the populist measures Murtala took against "corruption" played well with the Nigerian masses, but in the long run they also contributed to the decay of the Nigerian civil service, which had the side-effect of encouraging the very corruption Murtala claimed to be fighting. If you are a poorly-paid civil servant who no longer even has the lifetime employment security you used to be able to count on, why not steal as much as you can while you have the chance?

Sad to say, as egomaniacal, power-hungry and selfish a human as Obasanjo is, his second* round in the office counts as the best Nigeria has ever had, which is really not saying much. Unfortunately, in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king, and Obasanjo had the "luck" to be preceded and succeeded by pygmies - I put "luck" in quotes because Obasanjo's selfish desire to continue pulling the strings behind the curtain is also largely to blame for the rise of useless leaders like Yar'adua, Jonathan and Buhari. What does it say about the quality of a country's leadership that someone like this counts as the best it has ever had?

*It was during Obasanjo's first tenure that the disastrous Land Use Decree was passed, a horrible law that still holds back Nigeria's development today.
