superior1: There is nothing inspiring, he could get a job in a school while he undergo his master program and beside there a lot of scholarship for first class graduate. This is what we call profit less hardwork, work smart not hard. 1 Like |

can't you go into PURE WATER BUSINESS. Bricklaying should be for graduate of building technology or quantity surveying. 1 Like |

Certificates are not enough. Success is a product of vision. From Marconi the father of wireless communication, to the authors of the world wide web, to the inventors of the very mobile devices used to view his sorry ass toiling away with cement, Africa always has its priorities in a twist. |

There is nothing unique about his situation (as far as this country is concerned),besides, that work could be fetching him more than what some graduates are being paid by lebanesse and Indians (with technical school certificates and "creative brain") in Lagos. A first class brain doesn't need first class certificate to make good living. This situation is not likely to get better if we don't change our approach to formal education. Formal education is meant to refine or enlighten a crude mind, not to enslave him to white collar nonsense. It is nice to have a good job but blaming a failed system for not having one brings no solution. Trust any government at your own peril. |

I thank you for your courage, may this post be a point of contact for big things to come to you. Doors will open for you through this post by His grace. Meanwhile, there are so many children of politicians with bought results or no pass that are sitting in offices not knowing their left from their right on what to do. |

He graduated with distinction to end up a bricklayer ...What's inspiring about this? |

superior1: it is not really inspiring. the knowledge he has acquired should guide him in developing business plan that will generate cashflow. he should be controlling. |

phemsie: My post juxtaposed University with Distinction, because the OP clearly indicated more once that the guy graduated from a University, it was a pointer to the non coloration between both. I know that, one gets distinction from Polytechnic and unless you have some inside information, OP was not clear enough. 1 Like |

This is the result of not being properly guided and informed from sec school. Had this guy gone to even the polytechnic to study building tech right from onset, he would have become a full fledged builder by now. Rather he wasted 4years of his life studying a useless course with no job prospects in Nigeria. And some people would continue to deceive themselves that the course one studied doesn't matter. That's a big lie! Please guys, let's start advising the younger ones to choose courses that have well defined career paths and not those useless ones that are neither here nor there. If you must study courses in the basic sciences, prepare your minds from onset that you would go back for post graduate studies(MSc and PhD) immediately after service, and make sure you have a flair for teaching. Don't stop at BSc level and expect to get any meaning job. It rarely works that way! 1 Like |

Education.... Education.... Education......Never you make mistake of substituting knowledge for intelligence......It is not the same........If you truly have distinction and you are really intelligent......then there is nothing inspiring in this story........it is depressing. |

The time he wasted studying Microbiology in the polytechnic could have earned him a degree or HND in Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management, Etc. With a degree/HND in Architecture, he could proceed to register and start a proper D&B Company in Nigeria. It takes more than distinction to excel in Nigeria. It is not always about hustling and being street smart.. Smartness is staying in one position and making things happen; smartness is not running helter skelter with bricks and cement. 1 Like |

Such is life. Education is more than a white collar job. The common norm with graduate is getting white collar which was predominantly available in the early 70s, 80s and 90s.Reason being that, the economy as at then was relatively stable.Money has a great value and Naira compete favourably well with other currencies of the world. Also the level of corruption experienced then, compared now, was very low. Education was highly esteemed and being a graduate was really an ASSET to the person and to the government . Further, Human capital formation was greatly needed in the early stage of economic growth and development. So competent graduate was highly needed in their respective field of endeavor. Infact, the demand for labour force was highly more than its supply. Thus, making their salaries to be very handsome All this enumerated above were enjoyed and was in Vogue in those days. In today's Nigeria, many things have changed and the reverse is just the case, in the so called jet age of globalization. Capital intensive mode of production have to some extend replaced Labour intensive mode.Resulting into structural unemployment. |
