When an agripreneur establishes an agri-business, a great deal of work goes into making it a success. Experienced agripreneur will tell you that success in agribusiness is planned and does not happen by accident. Several factors contribute to the success of livestock farms in Nigeria, and understanding what they are and how they work together can help your agri-business succeed.
Fund: Fund must be available as when needed according to plan to avoid creating stress factors which would cost so much in revenue loss.
Housing: Proper ventilation and spacing is a critical success factor. Position your house to give the animal’s maximum ventilation and reduce heat.
Biosecurity: Disease entrance and spread are as a result of any form of breach in biosecurity. Foot bath, car bath, prohibition of unauthorized persons etc.
Water: Watering and water source is of great importance. Bad water source or water getting contaminated in livestock farm signifies that the farm will fail. Water should be managed to ensure that clear and clean water is available to the animals ad libitum.
Nutrient: Most livestock farm’s fail because they wanted to reduce the cost of feed by compounding feeds. Farms should only venture into self-compounding with available ingredients. All nutrients must be readily available in the market to prevent malnutrition.
Expertise: Training and retraining of staff are important no matter how small the level and acquisition of knowledge of modern trend is a factor to growth. Consultancy is paramount
Sales: products produced must be sold. Proper marketing with vigorous advertisement will ensure the product is made available to the target market.
Management: Pilfering shrinkages, indulgence, misappropriation are few of the several epidemics that constantly plaque livestock farms in Nigeria. Workers steal animals, eggs, feed, money and even drugs if they are not properly monitored. Sales agents and drivers could sell at different prices and report differently. Effective management of this ends are critical factors.
Administration: At full capacity, Management is separated from the administration, when the owner is not directly involved in the day to day management. Absentee farming is hazardous. Someone with stake in the venture should give quality time to it to survive.

from my experience, poor planning on part of the Farmer. a poor Market structure. (middle men make the money while the farmers suffer)sincerely farming in Nigeria is very challenging. if you can solve feed cost issues, infrastructure, and a well organized sale distribution channel, you are safe.

From what I gather Buhari's boys AKA Fulani Herdsmen are all working hard to make sure Famine hits 9ja.

The Herdsmen Rampage in Edo State stops farmers from farming

No wonder things are so dastardly retched for the youth in edo state.

See the plight of the young man shown on CNN that was enslaved and sodomized in Libya. Thousands of young women traveling to Libya then onto Italy to engage in prostitution.

The elected APC government of Oshiomole and now Obaseki are refusing to fight this genocidal, ethnic cleansing Fulani herdsmen with all their might.

Why ?.? Please don't tell me it is the fear of offending the APC president PMB. Furthermore, The federal security forces are being allowed to strangle the local economy by extorting money from citizens trying to go to work.

Then they wouldn't do their job which is to protect the citizenry from these terrorist herdsmen.

Vengeance is mine says the Lord.

One of the most important factors in livestock farming is understanding the timeline needed to first establish a commercial herd count. When starting out in either cattle, goats, pigs,or sheep you have to be prepared to factor in a timeline of around 3 years plus to build your stock, your starting stock needs to multiply to such numbers that birth of animals on your farm is more than monthly head count sales. This is the greatest challenge many startup livestock farms face, where do you get the working capital during this period, - feed, shelter, salaries , security, transport etc. You need patience, you need the capital and proper planning during this stage.

PLAN, BE PATIENT, BE PREPARED FOR LONG HAUL

Get past this stage and the future is bright, so during this stage you might need to keep your day job, even if you a backer you must be prepared to be patient. For bio-security you just don't go out every week and buy more animals to add to your livestock, build up your own herd, you won't then have to worry about diseases being brought in from bought in animals

Also beware of middle men

Good Luck guys

Anyway we are Jessam Cattle Ranch & Farms based in Emene Enugu
