The Bloukrans Bridge, located in South Africa is noted for scenic view and history behind it. Here are four things to know about the Bridge and the river underneath.

Location

The Bloukrans River is a short river situated in the Tsitsikamma Region of Garden Route, South Africa.

Formation

The River forms the border between the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces and is located in the Tsitsikamma region of the Garden Route.

Recognition

The bridge – The Bloukrans Bridge – in 2003 was recognised as the world’s highest commercial bungee bridge. The height is at 261m (708.661ft) above the Bloukrans River. It has a central span of 272m (892.388ft) and length of 451m (1479.66ft) in total.

Notable records Made at the Bridge

Records have been made and broken in the Bloukrans Bungee Bridge. Scott Huntly holds the world record of the highest number of jumps in 24 hours at 107 jumps. Mohr Keet was the oldest person to jump off the bridge at the age of 96 in 2010. In 2003, Veronica performed 19 bungee jumps in our hour, the highest as at that time. However, James Field broke the record by 23 more jumps near the Tower Bridge, London in 2010.

PS. Bungee or bungy is an extreme sporting activity that is characterised by jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord (“bungee”). Tall structure which is usually a fixed object, such as a bridge, crane, pole or building. The jumper falls from the apex with the cord (“bungee”) attached to his/her feet and to the jump site.
