From what I heard from a reliable source in Kenya, both patients bear the same name, and were wheeled into the hospital both unconscious. And that the ward nurse was the one who mistakenly interchanged the case notes and the wrong patient was wheeled to the theater.

Such error happen all the time in all the teaching hospitals in Nigeria especially the one in Ibadan, but Doctors in Niaja never admit they make mistakes. If it in Niaja they will cover up the health workers who commited the crime and blam it on either patient or care giver.....speaking from experience.....so sad lipsrsealed embarassed embarassed

Maybe their doctors are actually graduates of theatre arts...that's why there is drama in their surgery theatre. lmao

This is gross negligence of the highest order, oh man if this was a civilized country, this patient will be happy right now and thinking of retirement after suing the life out of the doctors and hospital. On the bright side though, maybe this was the intervention of a higher supreme being, as the patient is said to be recovering and wouldn't need surgery after all.
Do you know what NEGLIGENCE really means...??

Why is Kenya always in the news for wrong and bad reasons.

First Nairaland is not news. Its Gossip and nigerians Love gossipping.
Well its not only kenya, but also zimbabwe, SA, Ghana and basically any african country thats abit better than Nigeria. Anyting to make us nigeria forget about our leaders.
Funny thing i read an artical in vanguard.ng claiming Nigeria has the highest peadophile cases in the world. Makes Sense wit all those uneducated muslims. N Boko haram stealin girls and raping them. But such an artical wont come up in here.

They need to review their management. Identification of patients is very important before any intervention. Patient’s name, date of birth and address are established to make sure the right patient is being treated.Even in trauma situations or when the patient is unable to confirm their identity, there should be a tag with vital and identification details to differentiate patients who might have similar names.

The Kenyan doctors goofed big time on this. How do you open up someone’s cranium without being guided by fluoroscopy? They should’ve reviewed the imaging done on the patient or done a new one. They can’t possibly open up someone’s skull expecting to see thrombosis...incompetent phools.
they had same last name, the mistake here is that the name tags of the patient were put on the wrong patient,so the doctor came picked up a chart read the diagnosis, saw the imaging scans of the named person on the chart,.... Only later to discover he had read the wrong patients chart/scans.. the surgeon is not at fault here, intact, he was competent enough to discover that there was no clot in the brain of the patient on the table like it had showed in the MRI scans, the one at fault is the nurse who put the wrong chart at the wrong patient

That was a dangerous and unsafe way of treating such a patient. There was no need to open the skull. Intervention should’ve been through the femoral artery guided by fluoroscopy. He shouldn’t have relied on pre scan alone.

whether to open or not depends on the type of clot -which neither you or I have access to the patients scans, the clot could have been just below the dura which would requite drilling a small hole on the skull, or in some cases is the clot is severe enough it would require doing a craniotomy which involves opening the skull, from the story, the patient was brought in unconscious which probably mean the clot was very severe
