Computer engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the design, implementation, programming, verification, and analysis of computing systems. Our computer engineering program provides an education in the fundamentals of mathematics and physical sciences, coupled with a strong emphasis on analysis and design of computer hardware and software that is essential for solving real-world problems. This includes such diverse areas as biomedical devices, environmental controls, automobile control systems and intelligent vehicle systems, voice/speech recognition, computer intelligence and cellular communications. By understanding a computer system from top to bottom – from application software to operating systems to hardware and circuits – computer engineers are well prepared to create a wide wide array of computing systems and devices needed for the modern society.
The computer engineering program emphasizes three broad technical areas: computer architectures, software design, and applications of microprocessors; communications and digital signal processing; and microelectronic design, layout and fabrication of digital integrated circuits. Graduates of computer engineering can work in all segments of the broad and thriving computer industry as software engineers, programmers, computer system architects, microprocessor/hardware designers, among many other specialties. This includes careers in computer engineering through employment in industry, government or private practices, as well as in related engineering, science or pr professional disciplines such as electrical engineering, computer science, bioengineering, business, law, or medicine.
Computer engineers who have a higher level degree, as well as knowledge or experience with computer software, will have the best job prospects.
Also, graduates may pursue advanced studies in electrical engineering or related engineering, science, or professional fields and be able to serve in leadership positions in academia, industry or government.
