i prefer chemical engineering but anything petroleum is always considered to be big money ie potential income. A perception which isnt that far off the mark anyway.

Geology is also good. [s]Not sure if you need connections to make it big in the field.[/s]

It depends on what you want to do in the future.
For the oil sector, it doesn't really matter what engineering you do at undergrad, I think. These days, it's a lot more competitive, with most engineering fresh intakes having masters degrees already.

I'd say you can do either, but if you are particularly interested in the petroleum sector, just do pet engineering straight.

I'm a Petroleum Engr working in the Industry. My background is Chemical Eng first degree and an Msc in Pet Eng. I think is better to have your first degree in another engineering specialty before an Msc in Pet Eng even if you want to work as a Pet Eng. Pet Eng is a bit narrow and with an Msc you can cover all you need to know in one year and the rest comes with exp. Most of my colleagues took the same root as I did ( not necessarity Chem Eng, some EE, maths, Mech or even geology). As per getting a good job, a good degree is a good starting point, most companies require a 2.1 and above and pray to God as well. I hope this helps. Good luck. it pays to work hard!!!

Jikings is right. Chemical engineering is broad and would give you an edge in terms of job opportunities and also specialisation. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and I hope to do a masters in Oil and Gas Engineering. So I will advise you go the chemical route.

I should major in petroleum engineering due to petroleum itself is you for making chemicals

You can do petroleum if you like it. You would cash in from now-20 years. Oil maybe gone in the next 20 years, but it's the oil companies that would sell us alternative energy. You would see them with tankers selling hydrogen. Chevron already sells geothermal energy. They have the deepest pockets and are not stupid.

Once you are in, you are in and in 20 years you should be in upper management cashing in grin

@jikings
i was reading and saw that you are a petroleum engineer who got a chemical engineering degree and then a masters in petroleum. i would appreciate any advice you have to offer about my current situation. so my situation is that i have currently been accepted into both LSU for petroleum engineering and Georgia Tech for chemical engineering (they don't have petroleum). as i'm sure you know Tech is one of the best schools in the nation and both of my parents went there, so there is a strong push for me to go there. however I don't really want to be a generic chemical, civil, mechanical, etc engineer. it just seems non interesting to me whereas petroleum is a unique field, seems interesting, and has a little bit of each of the engineering's involved, and of course they get paid nicely. so then i started thinking that i could go to Tech and major in chemical and then get a masters in petroleum from LSU. that way my parents are happy, i have a highly valued degree, not all of my eggs are in one basket in case something happens, and will have a masters in petroleum so i can be a petroleum engineer like i want to be. however i have a friend who is currently at LSU majoring in petroleum engineering and he told me that there isn't much of a difference between getting a BS in petroleum verses a masters and said i should just go straight for a BS in petroleum from LSU if that's what i wanted to do rather than take the detour of going to Tech. he also said that the way into this field is to get internships and start building experience and that petroleum companies don't really look at say schools from Georgia as they do schools located where oil is, so it would also be harder for me to get internships and break into the field. (i have no idea if this information is correct, it is just what he has told me). so based on that i believe i should go to LSU and get my PETE degree but my parents still want me to go to Tech because a degree from tech is highly valued and can get you a job anywhere and a chemical engineering degree has more options and isn't putting all my eggs into one basket like petroleum is. however chemical engineers don't make as much as petroleum engineers and the only type of chemical engineering aspect i am interested in is petroleum. after reading that you majored in chemical and then did a masters in petroleum and are now a petroleum engineer, i was curious as to what you think of my situation and what would be the best thing for me to do now because i know the industry has changed since you last posted and the industry is currently in a downturn (which my parents love to point out). although i know the industry is very cyclical and will rebound eventually so i am not to worried. one of my concerns is that if i did go through Tech and then mastered in petroleum is that i wouldn't get a job as a petroleum engineer and just as a chemical and/or wouldn't get paid as much as someone who just went to LSU and did petroleum engineering straight up. also if you don't mind me asking some more personal questions (feel free not to answer if you don't want to) how did it work out for you? did you become a petroleum engineer like someone from LSU would or did you become a chemical engineer who works for a petroleum company? is your salary comporable to someone who specifically graduated as a petroleum engineer or is it different like my friend told me it would be. and in case you were wondering, i live in georgia so i have in state for Tech and if i did go to LSU i would also get instate tuition through the "common market" program, so there is no concern about having to pay a lots for out of state that factor in.

thank you so much for your advice!

also since i am new at this i don't want to risk not knowing if you responded so here is my email if you choose to send it to me this way: brett.silk1995@gmail.com

P.S. to anyone reading, i just made this account and not sure how it works. i just saw from another post that had "@DHighPries" so i figured that is how you tag someone and would be the best way to get their attention. if this is incorrect please help me out.

when did you post this? @brettsilk im new too. this is the first forum i make an account on and ive had the same problem decided what to do first. im down in miami though and would be the first in my family to go to college. im on my sophmore year in college and still dont know what to go for. my gpa is 3.8 and a loan wouldn't really be a problem i guess. i wish someone could strictly tell me >>> go for this <<< and i can just do it. deciding has my head spinning

Instead of marine engrg, why not go for mechanical engineering? Marine is restrictive. With a degree in mechanical, you can still work as a marine engineer woth a few additional certifications.
