For some people with eczema, the regular use of emollients is all that is needed to keep the condition under control.

However, for many people there will be a time when a steroid preparation is required as part of their treatment in order to bring an eczema flare under control. Topical steroids are the most common treatment for eczema flares. ‘Topical’ means something that is applied to the skin. ‘Steroids’ are a group of natural hormones, produced in the body by a variety of different glands. They are also produced synthetically as medicines. The topical steroids used for treating eczema are totally different from steroids used in contraceptive pills or for bodybuilding.

Topical steroids, used appropriately,for a short time and under supervision, are a SAFE and effective treatment for some skin conditions.

Topical steroids are known to whiten the skin 'FAST', a term that most Nigerian ladies always love to hear thereby encouraging 'pro mixers' to include them in their skin whitening recipes. We also see those that includes hair relaxer and hypo into their recipes but that story is for another day.

A popular topical steroid which I often see in skincare products is CLOBETASOL PROPIONATE OR BETHAMETASOL

A so called Organic products formulator on one of the Facebook groups always recommend this 'kpatakpata' cream to her followers and students for skin whitening. The unsuspecting followers will buy this cream and having no prior knowledge of Topical steroids,will keep using it till they start seeing effects like:

Severe stretch marks
Varicose veins
Bruising
Discolouration

And other scary side effect caused by long term usage of steroids.

To cut the long story short,simply stay away from topical steroids entirely,or better still,BECOME YOUR OWN NATURAL SKINCARE THERAPIST to avoid stories that touch the heart.
