It's too bad that it took a confirmed idi.ot like Reno Omokri for this news to make Nairaland's front page, but Bill Gates is right: Buhari doesn't have the first clue about economic matters, as evidenced not just by his refusal to privatize anything - not even the worthless NNPC refineries that have swallowed so much money for "turn around maintenance" - and his insistence on a "strong" Naira that drove away FDI while encouraging large-scale corruption through round-tripping, but in Buhari's latest act of foolishness, he has excluded Nigeria from the new African free-trade agreement, bowing to the wishes of lazy domestic manufacturers like Dangote who want to be protected from foreign competition, when they should be the ones salivating at the opportunity to sell their products in the rest of the continent. GEJ was an incompetent, thieving disaster of a President, but Buhari has proven little better in combating corruption, while showing himself far worse than the thief from Otuoke in terms of economic policy. All the Nairalanders who waste their time and energy defending either of these two curses upon Nigeria are either being paid for their efforts, are too blinded by tribalism to face reality, or are suffering from acute Stockholm Syndrome. 8 Likes 1 Share |

ernieboy:You see how you shot yourself. If Trump inherited "ground work" laid by Obama, what did Buhari inherited from Jonathan? Pls don't tell me a bullshit of biggest economy in Africa but have a debt profile of upward of $60B +. Economy that is still foreign dependent on virtually everything including toothpicks, tomato paste, textiles, noodles, cosmetics and what have you. An economy that handed over salary debt of workers that both federal and states cannot meet up with overhead payment of staff. A robust economy that reserve depleted to the lowest $22B in Nigeria history. Nigeria was on auto pilot since 2013 but the previous govt was patching it up to paint robust economy with all indices and indicators showing red alert. 2 Likes |

Jethrolite:I am cog sure he has no data with him. If he has why still giving Nigeria humanitarian assistance to it. Nigeria has not grown to the level he is seeing it. Everything about the economy has been false and not the true picture pasted to the world. Best economy in Africa but still rely on virtually on everything including toothpicks, tomato paste, rice, pencil etc. How you aware that Nigeria doesn't have an industry that produces pencils? Except lately, we import pencils and we're robust economy. The man is using America yardstick to measure Nigeria. |

[s] tope777:[/s] Going by your crooked and corrupt logic and mentality, 16 years of PDP was corruption galore that gave us nothing but zero infrastructure, darkness even though they budgeted and stole $20 billion power fund, no schools, no bridges, no credible healthcare, emptied treasury, Dasuki ATM looting and sharing and so on. So, if corruption nuder previous administrations gave us 1st TV station, 1st skyscraper, 3rd mainland bridge, Aso Rock and so on, exactly did Nigeria get for corruption, looting and stealing under 16 years of PDP? Do, you mind listing what NIGERIANS get in return for 16 years looting and stealing under PDP? Only corrupt people and Igbos come up with such corrupt and ignorant sentiments 3 Likes 3 Shares |

Even sef, where was 16 years of PDP looting and stealing ECONOMIC BLUEPRINT? The only place Ben Bruce the twitter clown finds his voice is on twitter and never on the senate floor to present his ideas and solutions, all the crooks, criminal and corrupt opportunists do is forming on Twitter. The Ben Bruce criminal and thief sef stole N11 billion taxpayers money that he's yet to pay back. Even sef, the twitter senator was the DG of NTA for 8 years, but exactly what did he so at NTA? He ran it to the ground while his own silverbird progressed and developed. Bunch of thieves and unpatriotic elements.. 3 Likes |

Mr. gate speech on Nigerian economic plan as it does not reflect the need of Nigerians is absolutely right, although some people particularly the government and its associate will find it a detriment. I'm so optimistic and carefully observe the current economic reality in the country despite the fact that the government is working toward revamping the scurvy and injurious economy suffered from a long damaged by cowards and greed leaders of past administration, instead of government to strictly focus on the revive and improving the Health, Education and creating opportunities it then merely went at wrong path leaving luckless nigerians in a sorry and critical stage ever experiencing since independence. |

I presume he's implying that the economic blueprints of previous administrations were suitable to our needs abi? And Since he knows better than us, then let him suggest the economic blue print he thinks would suit our peculiar needs na! Nansense! Its easy to criticize a govt over policy/blueprint and its another to proffer viable solutions. Economic plans are not magic. They take years and in some cases decades to take effect. Yes we may not be feeling the impact of current policies now and there is alot to criticise about this government's approach to many prevailing issues but rational-thinking minds recognize this govt's determination to; - clamp down on the corruption and wanton looting (of our commonwealth) that has hampered the growth of our economy for so long. - ban unnecessary imports like toothpick, pencils, eggs, chicken, rice, palm oil etc thereby encouraging local production/manufacturing - boost agriculture - kick-start local oil refining (very soon) so we don't continue to spend billions of dollars on importation of refined crude oil(dont get me started on Billions and Trillions wasted on subsidy). - increase our Capital budgetary allocation and as a result several ongoing infrastructural projects to show for it..including Energy/Power projects.. - Create jobs from all of the above Bill gates should understand that due to failure of our leadership over the years, we are not only suffering from the deficit of basic infrastructure, amenities and other services that improve the living standards of the common man, we are also yet to become agronomically self-subsistent and as a result have failed to lift a significant percentage of the masses out of poverty and starvation. We are not U.S.A where the poorest of the poor, though homeless, are guaranteed 3 (quality) meals, free medical care, free education, own iPhones, mac books and have access to free WiFi. Whatever his indices are for assessing our economy, he should understand that we are still a baby economy that has been damaged so badly that the concerted efforts of the current administration are basically just getting us crawling out of the woods. We are trying to diversify our economy hence are now rejuvenating our rice pyramids/mills among others and are looking to hopefully revamp our steel, textile, and other industries. The era of importing virtually every product/produce from other countries, including his Country (U.S), at the expense of our depleting foreign reserves is over... If he's not happy about these strides that this govt's trying to make, make him carry go.. 1 Like 1 Share |

This thread is an irony. Look at the Nigerians that should cower and cover their faces in shame slinging muds up and down. So NIgeria was an eldorado before this government came in? Such hypocrisy. Same idiots that ran the country into the ground still have the audacity to be spewing rubbish. Same Twitter senator that's owing staff salaries is talking. As much as the current government does not have a clue as to moving things forward. His quotes is pointedly speaking to the average NIgerian but all would be lost in our usual lack of decorum, sensationalism and politicisation of everything. He stated human capital and that Nigeria would only succeed if a greater amount of Nigerians are successful which all boils down to the family units. What is the average Nigerian family like? What is the constraints making them unsuccessful? Government may factor in largely but it goes much more deeper than that. Or aren't we the same people who would give birth to ten kids and give them poor education because of scarce resources? Or aren't we the same Nigerian family unit that would prorities "pleasing people with extravagant spending" instead of investing into Worthy things. Abi...go through this thread and find numerous unemployed graduate brandishing the latest phones, wrist watches and shoes while they haven't invested in their own personal growth. You guys continue. Wish una luck. The government is a reflection of the followers. All talk but no common sense. 2 Likes 1 Share |

ihatesycophant:He hasn't done that. On what basis can Nigeria be compared to USA. Isn't it obvious Buhari's economic plan is a mess, actually this government has no economic plan. Bill Gates was only being polite when he mentioned there was an economic plan. He gives Africa humanitarian assistance because he is a philanthropist and an epic one at that. Tony Elumelu is giving out $100m in 10 years to support entrepreneurs and you can see the immense impact with the programme being in its fourth year. That money on the other hand is something Bill Gates can give in a day. When you're working with a charity that has excess of $20bn in endowment, you can do anything. Nigeria is not the best economy in Africa, we are be deviled by so many plagues but we have population advantage and therefore support large business scalability unlike other African countries. The economy of Lagos is bigger than that of Kenya but Kenya is the biggest economy in East Africa. The good thing is everyone is becoming more aware and soon the current crop of politicians won't even be able to secure any office in this country. 1 Like |
