Free and fair elections and Nigeria have never been allies. The electoral process of picking our leaders has had many flaws, loop holes and majorly led to severe unrest and panic across the nation. The idea of neutrality in election by our so called elder statesmen, former Presidents etc has never been true. In fact years after Gen Olusegun Obasanjo left Power he sneakily confessed to supporting the winner of the second Republic Presidential election Alhaji Shehu Shagari. The June 12 election which was claimed to be the freest and fairest of them all though unconvincingly was dissolved by the Babangida Government who also claimed the election was filthy in its process and which also led to the detainment of Chief MKO Abiola. With the return of Democracy in 1999 the electoral process witnessed another ” wuru wuru” and Chief Obasanjo was elected as President. The Obasanjo administration aggravated the level of dupery in the system and snatching of ballot boxes and empowering of hooligans with fire arms to influence the electoral process. From Ephraim Akpata, Morris Iwu and co. Nigerians were never satisfied and many asked for something more credible than what has been seen.



Fast forward to 2014 the electoral body INEC had seriously upgraded. The body introduced the use of card readers to check mate fraudulent and ghostly thumb printing and increase the credibility of picking the legit winner and this was well received by many Nigerians but even so this was also a new means of rigging a candidate out of victory in a stealthy way.

The two major parties for the elections was the ruling party PDP and the major opposition, the ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS which was largely a coalition of disgruntled ex-PDP members, CPC and Tinubu’s Action Congress. INEC has a sole duty in ensuring the masses had their ‘voting guns'( PVC) in their possession before the scheduled date for voting. However the electoral body were systematically stalling the distribution of these items as a means to infleunce the process. The previous election which brought the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan to power saw an aftermath violence in the North after it was declared that he won and in 2012 Gen Buhari in a rally made his baboon and dog comment insisting that there should be no rigging. President Jonathan seeing that a biased election could scupper the serenity of the nation did his possible best to avoid a repeat of the scenario in 2011 and gave INEC all the support it needed to prepare for a credible election. However his good intentions of PVC and free credible elections were used in accomplishing his own ousting.
