If you have noticed small hard bumps on the back of your head, especially after a haircut or close shave, you are not alone. A recent study showed that 15% of young African American men suffered from acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), a form of folliculitis in which bumps form on the back of the head and neck.

Many young men can trace the formation of these bumps to a visit to the barber's shop or a haircut. However, the exact cause is unknown. What is known is that, if left untreated, these small bumps can join together into a larger mass of tissue, like the patient below.



However, there are options for treatment. The only curative treatment is often surgical removal of the affected tissue. When caught early enough, however, AKN bumps may be effectively treated with laser therapy. Medication alone is not guaranteed to get rid of these bumps but may be prescribed by a physician for use with surgical or laser treatment.
