The Titanic was a British passenger liner that set sail on April 10, 1912 on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It had an estimated 2224 people on board including passengers and crew, and on April 15, 1912 it sunk killing an estimated 1500 after colliding with an iceberg.

Below are some of the things that stood the Titanic in a class of its own.

1)The Titanic was the largest ship afloat during its time and also the most luxurious with its first class accommodation designed to be the pinnacle of luxury and comfort. It had on board a gym, libraries, swimming pool, high class restaurants , luxury cabins, squash court and massage rooms.

2)The Ship had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors.

3)It cost 1.5 million Pounds at the time it was ordered in 1908 with a 2015 estimated value of 300 Million Pounds.

4)The Ocean Liner carried some of the wealthiest people in the world and also had thousands of artifacts on board, of which some have been recovered and displayed at museums around the world.

5)It is the second largest Ocean Liner wreck in the world, with the largest being sister vessel HMHS Brittanic.

6)The Titanic had 10 decks excluding the top of the officers’ quarters.

7)There were 3 main engines and 29 boilers. The furnaces of the boilers required 600 tons of coal everyday which were hand shoveled by 176 men working round the clock. 100 tons of ash was also disposed daily by ejecting it into the sea.

coolThe electrical plant was capable of producing more power than an average city power station at the time.

9)The ship’s rudder was so large about 78 feet 8 inches (23.98 m) high and 15 feet 3 inches (4.65 m) long, weighing over 100 tons, it required steering engines to move it.

10)Titanic’s radiotelegraph equipment (then known as wireless telegraphy) ran a 24 hour schedule sending and receiving passengers’ telegrams. It also handled navigation messages including ice warnings and weather reports.

11)It had a total passenger capacity of 2453- 833 First Class Passengers, 614 in Second Class and 1,006 in Third Class. In addition to capacity for crew members exceeding 900.

12)The titanic had a lot of mail and cargo. It had five postal clerks working 13 hours a day, seven days a week, sorting out about 60,000 mails. The ship was also equipped with eight electric cranes, four electric winches and three steam winches to lift cargo and baggage in and out of the hold.
