Not Nigeria alone. Any society that places a premium on the potentials of the loins over that of the brain is bound to have more hapless folks making hopeless decisions than wise and positive ones.

80% of the traders are our brother and sisters from the EAST, that is their own way of developing Lagos. Selling Okrika and all sort of junks.

Almost every part of Lagos have been converted into a marketplace. On roadsides, ontop of pedestrian bridges, inside Molues, in traffic, etc., everywhere is a market.

This unregulated commercialization of every spot in Lagos is what gives Lagos its rowdy outlook.

Indeed, this is what prompted the Lagos state government to establish several task forces with the objective of riding the state of trading at these unusual spots.

However, there is a location that besides being illegal, it also poses an enormous risk to the traders who ply their trades there. It is on railway tracks.

It common for railway tracks, especially in the Lagos area, to have convergences of traders selling all manner of goods. These locations are typically Mecca of some sort for those in search of “Okrika” clothes and other used and substandard wares to buy.

Every day, traders and their customers turn these locations to huge markets.

Some examples of railway track locations in Lagos with huge market activities are Oshodi, Mushin, Ikeja-Along, Yaba bus-stop, etc.

Tragically, this unusual and very risky trading practice has led to the death of some people, especially those who were not quick enough to depart the scene for an oncoming train.

In addition, train trips that has been scheduled to arrive at its destinations at a particular time are sometimes disrupted or delayed because it would be halted for longer than necessary for these traders to clear their wares from the track before it would continue its journey.

Sometimes, some people at these railway marketplaces have made fatal judgments forgetting that trains are not as controllable as cars that can be stopped at will.

Interestingly, during the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola, there was a ban on trading on railway tracks. This ban was vigorously enforced at the time. However, the enforcement of that ban appears to have been relaxed in the current administration.

It gets even more curious, when one discovered that certain task forces are deployed to some of these locations to collect revenues from the illegal traders at these railway track marketplaces.

Perhaps, this is the reason why this high-risk illegality persists on our railway tracks.

Autojosh, u snapped this pictures in Agege
Its even worse at night, the craziest thing happening in Agege is that the the train don't have no choice than to slowdown till it move away from the trading zone, some people won't even move their wares until the train is just some inches away from em..

I can't blame those traders, they are trying. what Government should have done is to create a platform for those traders to showcase their talent. they are very good in business. with little amount of capital, they are good to go. we have some of them here in Abuja but instead of government to open a market for them, they are just pursing them out of the street, some of trader self have gone to jail because he or she is selling market along the road. AMAC they disturb them very well. God bless nija

This picture posted particularly is Agege, very close to Agege rail way police station.
The railway police at Agege and Railway official are very much aware of these and they collect the rent out for space.
The consequence and hazard to human life is not their concern anyway.

Without sentiment, Lagos will continue to experience those ills an others. Over population is responsible for that. The development of other state will make it ease. Govt will need to intensify more effort to curb that by providing shops at low cost.

Oga you just want to deny people their daily bread abi, when the government is busy demolishing shops, they should come to your house and shade their market abi, see as long as the train has loud, they always clear ahead of time .

What else do you expect from a government that is only sensitive on collection of tax and increase in land use charge but never bothered to utilise those fund for the creation of jobs and giving out soft loans to SMEs. You hardly find people trading at unwanted places during Fashola's regime. This present government concentrates more on creating bus stops, BRT tracks and motor parks without considering proper avenues for traders for people. When this government destroyed Oshodi market to create Motor park where else do you want traders to move to?
Oga keep quite cos this been on from time immemorial

I cant keep quite like a coward who you are. What stop the truth from being told. Is it the same way Fashola left Oshodi sanitized, is the way it is now? More concentration are being place on BRT roads and parks then increment in tax.
