Five students who represented Nigeria in a debate in Singapore and won‎, returned to Bauchi during the week.

The students emerged top in the Oldham Cup Debate Championship alongside other students from China, Hong Kong, India, Korea and Taiwan.

They travelled to Singapore with two teachers and Chief Librarian of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) after emerging as first in the national debate organised by Office of Hajiya Aisha Buhari, Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari.

On their return, the students and teachers were received by the state SUBEB Chairman, Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Yero at the board's headquarters in Bauchi.

Speaking at the reception held for the students, Bauchi State SUBEB chairman, Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Yero commended the students for the feat they have achieved.

He said that they have made not only Bauchi State proud but Nigeria as a whole.

Professor Yero stressed that, the feat has also shown that despite challenges, the north east and the entire northern part of the country is utilising it's human potentials especially in the area of education.

The chairman said that if opportunities would be given to children in Bauchi State, they will perform above expectations promising that the tempo would be maintained so that students are encouraged to excel in their studies.

He commended governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar for his encouragement and financing of the students and their teachers to Singapore.

He said that the students were selected out of 40 best students selected, two from each of the 20 local governments of the state.

Also speaking, SUBEB secretary, Mahmoud Kari said that the board is proud of the performance of the students in the competition which made them emerged the best.

On his part, the student's team leader, Abdulbarri Yahaya thanked Bauchi State government, SUBEB and all others including their parents for their support and encouragement.

Reaponding, Maryam Ya'u said that, they are happy for participating and winning the competition which she said is an encouragement for them to face their studies and achieve more in the future.

It could be recalled that the students had earlier emerged the best in the Presidential Schools Debate held ‎in Nigeria.

The five students that participated in the competition are Abdulbarri Yahaya from Bauchi local government, Hassan Ali Hassan from Shira, Hamida Aliyu from Bauchi, Maryam Ya'u from Jama'are and Rashida Dauda from Dass local government.
