Recently, the word Edo as a tribe and language is gradually been replaced with another word 'bini'. The Edo people are the major ethnic group in Edo state. Others include Esan, Okpe, Esan, Afemai/Etsako, Ora, Akoko-Edo, Igbanke, Emai and some others who are actually in one way or the other related to the Edo people. In 1991 Bendel state was divided into two, one side Delta state and the other Edo state. Edo state was named after the major ethnic group in that area which is Edo.
Although the people still refer to themselves as ivbié edo, meaning Edo people in their language, but in most formal settings still address themselves as bini, especially because that's what other tribes call them.
Lets begin to renew our minds and uphold the original name which is Edo, and educate other tribes too.
Thanks

The problem arose because the state was named
after your tribe. People have to make a distinction because of the confusion it creates. If a person says they are from Edo state, people naturally assume that they are from Benin. So for the others to maintain their own identity, Bini will continue to enjoy prominence in usage instead of Edo.

I am from Ondo state and some would assume that makes me a speaker of the dialect which it is named after. So when soeaking about those people I say "people from Ondo town" .

If they had another name by which they are known I am sure that by now the other groups in the state who are not Ondo would have made it more popular. Even they would have started using it.
It is a natural, inevitable, confusion something, brother. Na so life be.

Its far better to rename the state than rename a tribe and language that has existed for centuries.
