Tobacco smoke contains many chemicals that are very harmful to its users. There are about 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke which at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia.

These harmful substances from tobacco, can cause severe and serious health problems.

At Naijatoptens we have written a list of 10 Dangerous diseases caused by smoking.

#1. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)


Tobacco Smoking can lead to chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease which is type of obstructive lung disease characterized by breathing problems and poor air flow.

#2. Cancer


Smoking cigar can cause cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung and sometimes cancer of the pancreas.

#3. Cardiovascular disease

Approximately 10% of cardiovascular disease is attributed to smoking. These are diseases associated with heart and blood vessels.

#4. Emphysema

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath due to over-inflation of the alveoli. Cigarette smoking is the major cause of emphysema.

#5. Chronic Bronchitis


Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. This can be caused by excessive smoking of tobacco.

#6. Impotence

Smoking cigarette leads to Erectile dysfunction (ED), also called impotence.

#7. Asthma

While there are many factors that can lead to Asthma, smoking is one factor that can trigger asthma in asthmatic patients.

#8. Stroke

Smoking excessively increases ones risk of stroke. Tobacco products cause blood clots, arterial thickening, and raises triglycerides in the blood.

#9. Hypertension

Smoking tobacco can instantly raise ones blood pressure, also chemicals in tobacco can damage the lining of the artery walls leading to serious case of high blood pressure.

#10. Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the human arteries. The risk of having this disease is increased by tobacco smoking.
