If you reside in an estate or an organized community, you will easily relate with the topic. I used to wonder what the "heck" people gain from active participation in these associations. Beyond the need to develop the estate or community and present a common front to the government for agitations, there is more to it than meet the eye.

Some of these associations are reputed to have millions in their bank accounts. From the ones in the suburbs of Agege, Alimosho, Mosalasi etc to others in the high-brow areas like Dolphin, VGC, Oniru etc, the situation is the same. Seemingly gentlemen and ladies battle for leadership of these associations just to be in control of the resources residing in the bank accounts. Asides the resources, the leadership of these associations have access to the government of the day, and a lot of them utilize the opportunity to corner juicy contracts for themselves.

I stumbled on the registration letter of the Chairman of of the communities in the outskirts of Lagos. The Chairman had been accused of several things including having an affair with a married female resident. This is by the way. Whatever a man decides to do with his life is his problem as long as it is by mutual consent. So, the Chairman resigned amidst the controversies.

Will his resignation letter be accepted by his community? Time will tell. Next Saturday is the when the association meets. this is when the fate of the Chairman will be decided.
