Hello there, i am Jide Dosunmu, a wedding photographer and blogger based in Nigeria.

This post is not an open check to getting money from your photography in a blink of an eye but it would be an eye opener as to how to make money as a beginner photographer.

First, why do you need to make money from your photography? Funny right! But really it’s not that easy as a beginner or hobbyist to monetize or put a price on their photography since you are actually excited to bring out your camera and take photos of friends, families and foes. Yes! They are the best models around and the last time I checked, everybody likes free photos.

You are probably reading this blog post because you are at a cross road and you don’t know how to go about moving from the “don’t worry about paying” junction to the “I just sent your invoice” junction. About that, before you start to make money from your photography, you must ask yourself “am I ready to start charging people for my photography?” thus, the question “when are you ready to make money as a beginner photographer?” pops up.

So, let’s look at this from this angle, as a hobbyist or beginner photographer, have you ever made a picture and people go “wow! That’s some beautiful photos there?” oh, countless number of times right? Well, that’s not enough for you dive right into making money as a photographer.

Kelechi Amadi Obi once said “you are not ready to make money from your photography until you are obsessed with your images”. “Obsessed” in his words means that moment of self-appraisal after seeing an image you made, moments you say to yourself “oh boy! You are good.” That is actually the moment you start to put a price on the images you make.

The saying “no one will value you if you don’t value yourself” is actually true, the fact that other people see your images and sing your praises is not enough for you to dive into the photography business, but until you are confident and pleased at images you create and really know the value your images are worth, then people will see your images in the way you see them and be willing to pay for your services even as a beginner photographer.

Now that you are ready to make money from photography, here are few ways you can make money as a beginner photographer.

o Take a lot of pictures: The secret to becoming better enough to monetize your photography is taking numerous images, and as you do you will realize you are getting better and better by the day and that gives more confidence to put a price on your images.

o Acquire more knowledge: You can’t do things the same way and get different results, get out of your comfort zone and gain more knowledge and exposure, see what people are doing differently to get results and implement them into your photography business.

o Be unique: This is so important if you want to stand out and make money from photography, have a style that distinguishes you from every other photographer and cling to it like your existence depends on it (it actually does).

o Assist other photographers: Photographers around the world are always in need of assistants on different projects, join photography forums around you and be open to such opportunities to help, learn and also get paid while assisting another photographer.
