The Senate And The Mace by Jimsonjaat96(m): 2:07am On Apr 29, 2018
In the year 2000, the then Senate President, late Dr. Cuba Okadigbo, carried the mace, the symbol of authority of the legislature, and hid it in his village, during controversies on the moves to impeach him. He hid it a cave called 'Ogbunike Cave' in Anambra state.
That was the first 'tamper' with the Mace. Well, not until yesterday when a Senator who was suspended on his "unguarded" utterances on Election Amendment Act stormed the Senate and made away with the Mace. The Senate had to replace it with a temporary mace in order to continue the sitting. (Remember, no Mace, No Sitting).
I define this as a mockery in front of the international community. This reveals the level of our consciousness of law and order. Since yesterday the incident has generated an enormous amount of commentary, from the Senate, politicians, experts and concerned bodies. But I wish this could be back by action, I wish this would not be swept under the carpet, something we are known for.
Questions have been, "was there no security on ground (if there is ANY at all)?" Did the alleged masterminder of the the Mace theft has motives? And what did he stands to gain " Or, they were going to another place, they just missed their way to the Senate (so unlikely though)?"
Nigeria politicians are one funny people. These people are comedians of the centuries, some are scaling of fence, some are throwing chairs, one saddles himself with Urban dictionary vocabulary and self-coined grammars, to bamboozle fellow members, one is writing political letters to President's, one Governor showcases talent in disk jockeying, one Senator turns singer....... One just stole the Mace, they say it's an act of treason, let's see how it goes.
