Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has taking a jocular dig at the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Speaking at 58th NMA Conference held yesterday, he made the following comments :

“I welcome the Senate’s endorsement & support disclosed today by the Senate President, of FG’s earlier determined policy to spend 1% of our budget on healthcare in line with the National Health Act. The policy reflects the Buhari administration’s resolve to improve healthcare.

“Mr. Chairman, aside from lawyers, doctors are the next most important professionals. As one rude fellow said, lawyers are usually the cause of people’s medical problems, and doctors benefit from treating them.

“Mr. President, (of the Republic, I mean) also recognises the first place of lawyers by appointing 7 lawyers into the Federal Cabinet. We are closely followed by doctors, 4 of them are in the cabinet.

“But doctors have a ‘never say die’ approach to life, and so when we thought we had won, we suddenly found a doctor sitting in the position of the President of the lawmakers. By that I mean, the distinguished Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki. We are, however, comforted by the fact that he is now more a legal personality than a doctor. I trust that none of us will take our medical problems to him!”

Is this a case of clash of the professions or a politically motivated subtle jab?

It's good comic relief.

There's too much open and 'technical' tragedies in this government of yours, Mr Vice President.

It's ignorance that will make my vice president say Lawyers and the doctors that are the most important professionals. As a matter of fact, these two professions have the greatest concentration of lazy professionals and full time politicians.
The reason why most of the Nigerian lawyers and doctors became more popular than most of the other professionals is because most of the Nigerian lawyers and Doctors are full time politicians and their impact in the political space/turf has been less satisfactory. Check their primary sector of professional influence;the judiciary is a complete disappointment while the health sector is in a coma.
In other countries, other professionals are more popular. For example,in India,it is the Pharmacist and ICT professionals that are most popular and their sectors of influence are national pride to their countries.
But one thing is certain, everything will soon change. At some point in Nigeria, the most important professional is the one in the armed forces but today, their influence has waned completely.
