Azura Power Project ‘ll Complicate Nigeria’s Power Challenges —fashola by Mediamerge: 6:54pm On May 09, 2018

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola has disclosed that the expected addition of 459MW of electricity to the national grid from the Azura Power Project will only complicate the country’s current challenge with stranded power.

Stranded power is generated power that cannot be distributed.

“Azura would start commercial operations sometime in June, that is 459MW that would be added to the 2000MW of the already stranded power in the system. In addition to this, Afam is coming with 240MW,” Fashola told the media while on a visit to Ikorodu yesterday to commission a transmission substation.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has assured that the federal government plans to improve the distribution capacities of the 11 electricity distribution companies (discos) before the year end.

Acknowledging the challenges that came with the privatisation of the power industry the minister said government came up with the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP) as a component of its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to solve these challenges and put the sector on the path of sustainable growth.

On a positive note, he stated that generation and transmission capacities have improved.

According to Fashola, policy and progress such as the privatisation will have its challenges. It is these challenges that have positioned the PSRP to include metering to governance.

"...the governance issue is the full constitution of the NERC with the appointment of the chairman - today one item in the list of to-do items of the PSRP is now completed and we can proudly report that," Fashola said.

Electricity distribution is now the focus
Fashola said he was expecting the Azura Power in Edo State to come on stream fully with about 459MW, as well as Kaduna and Afam plants.

Acknowledging the challenges that came with the privatisation of the power industry the minister said government came up with the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP) as a component of its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to solve these challenges and put the sector on the path of sustainable growth.

Azura just sent a message that their plant was now completed and was ready to run full operation. That is 459MW of power. We are expecting another 240MW from Afam and another 215MW from Kaduna and also from Kashimbila. There is a lot of power coming. So, the distribution end is where our real challenge lies," he stated.

He disclosed that despite the fact the country currently has a capacity to transmit 7000MW, the distribution companies can only absorb 5,000MW leaving a balance of 2000MW of electricity that is lost.
“Unfortunately you can’t store power, what is generated is lost down the line,” he said.

What the country needs, he said, is more capacity in the immediate term in the distribution and transmission sides of the power value chain.
“So in my view, where investment should go now is into distribution and transmission.
We need more capital invested on the distribution and transmission side of the business, so that we can make the whole business venture worth the while. If people are producing what people cannot sell, then the business will struggle.”

Isn't it his duty as d Minister of Power to find a way around d said complications? Is it Nigerians dat will make d investment in distribution and transmission end? Are U and he trying to say he has achieved steady supply of Power to Nigerians? If so why is there still outages? Yes we've been hearing about distribution companies not able to pay for power generated. Abeg who's fault is it? Wen are we going to start taking responsibilities for things instead of shifting blames.
