Road safety education will soon be introduced in public primary and secondary schools in Plateau state.
This is according to the Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

Mrs Pat Emeordi, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Plateau state, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Jos.

According the Sector Commander, the initiative is aimed at inculcating safety education in children with a view to increasing their level of awareness.

“The idea behind this initiative is to catch them young and to enable them understand the fundamentals and rudiments of safety education.

“We are already talking with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the state Ministry of Education to ensure the implementation of the initiative.

“So, by the special grace of God, we shall soon start the programme in Plateau,” he said.

Emeordi explained that the safety education would be infused into core subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Science and Technical Education, among others.

“Government doesn’t need to employ new teachers to teach safety education, but teachers of these core subjects will be the ones to do it.

“We shall train these teachers who will in turn teach the students in the schools,’’ she added.

The Sector Commander called on the state government to support the initiative and the commission in its bid to rid the road of accidents.

Good move! They should also carry out a national orientation to road users.. But this can only be effective once they purge all the corrupt officials in the FRSC.

K, does this mean that there had been no road safety education in public schools before now?

During my youth service, I was in road safety CDS and we went to various primary and secondary schools in Zuba and environs once a month. We also had trainings for their staff so they could inculcate road safety education in their school activities.

I am surprised to hear that this is not done in other states plateau state

The country is way too lawless! If this is done, the next generation would feel a little bit of appeal about road usage, the dangers, good communication between FRSC and the common man. The positives are too numerous to mention man.

There will also be a sense of responsibility in sanitizing the already decayed system when it comes to procurement of DLs. Atleast, you and I can benefit from it somehow.

Are they oriented themselves. Have they pushed to make the road itself safe for driving? Many highways are unmarked making night driving more dangerous. Most traffic lights are not maintained, some are stupidly installed. Many roads have no streetlights.

Very good move, Nigerians need driving orientation and if it starts from school, in a decade or so it will start to reflect on our roads, where people will drive like human beings and not monkeys

this is a nice development, and a right step in the right direction. highly good for the development of our younger ones. its a good catch them young approach.

other sectors in Nigeria also need to follow this same path, for educating the mind of the young lads.
