Doctors at ISTH irrua respond to Mass casualty involving UBTH JOHESU members along Benin-Auchi Road.

This morning, news reached us at the accident and emergency service department of the irrua specialist teaching hospital, Edo State, of a mass casualty of accident victims along the ever-busy Benin-Auchi road.


Sources gathered that 19 out of the 20 victims were members of the UBTH chapter of JOHESU, the arm of health workers who are currently on strike and have placed most government hospital facilities under lock-and-key. They were said to be on their way to a social function at Auchi.


Thankfully, this is not the story at ISTH, IRRUA EDO STATE, as the hospital management along with the doctors who have been at their duty post for the past one month duration of the strike, have kept the hospital running at optimal levels.

Many times thesame JOHESU people will put call through ti me as a doctor to help them when their relatives have issues. Hypocrites

So much for doctor-patient confidentiality. Get off your high horse people, there is no hatred towards doctor. Isn't this your job, do you really think you deserve some accolades for doing your job, that you are actually paid for? All I have seen in the health sector are egomaniac and egocentric people aided by our no good government. Hey, I am not blaming JOHESU for fighting for equity and neither am I blaming doctors for adamantly wanting to remain king of the jungle without regards to other people in the sector. If only we could all get along and keep the patient in mind. So please doctors let us mock those in pain and give yourselves a pat on the back for doing your job. So much for the Hippocratic oath

For your information. those were outsourced / contract workers of UBTH they are not Johesu members and if its the Drs that are saving their life why di the CMAC call the unit NANNM chairperson begging that some nurses be allowed to attend to them which she did .So why didn't Drs do it all alone? "Yes, there was an accident of a group transiting to Auchi from Benin. They were rushed to our A/E at Irrua.
There were no deaths, but minor bruises and cuts. But some have mandibular distortions and other degrees of fractures that may need some days in hospital and scans to be done. But they are all stable.
We swung into action trying to call some of our nurses, and store officers and union members to go help out, we didn't really ask who they were initially, and we didn't want to argue while accident victims suffer. They are all there now helping with the treatment of the injured as it was very clear that the Doctors were helpless at a point. I have called the HOD of general stores to help with treatment items. The HOD of Pharmacy, my boss, was already on ground helping with pharmaceuticals, the nurses have arrived as their chairperson mandated and we have the situation under great control. After putting the anxiety to rest, we decided to really find out who the victims are and my secretary spoke to them and they said they are cleaners in UBTH. I put a call through to Comrade Igbinovia( SSA chair, UBTH) who confirmed to me that the cleaners in UBTH are all outsourced staff and belong to no union in UBTH.
Well, we are happy to relax our strike a bit for the injured and we are happy to prove that treatments are difficult without JOHESU members. We are also happy to prove that we have a largely humanitarian mindset.
That's the summary of what happened.
We have granted an interview in this regard to NTA Iruekpen which may end up at NTA Benin and possibly Abuja.
We will keep you updated as we go back to our total strike in this branch which is almost 100% compliant."

Let the truth be told if we still have any form of integrity left in us.
I gave the directive that padlocks be broken so as to gain access to materials. This was after I called the HOD pharmacy and his line rang out twice without response. I also called the Chairman of NANNMN first to inform her as at the time information that they were JOHESU members came to me. Reason being that should we loose any of the patient, issues of mismanagement by doctors would not be entertained. When I later got information from the CMD UBTH that they were not entirely full UBTH staff, therefore not entirely JOHESU members, I called her again stating clearly the facts so she can make an informed decision whether to come or not.
Of course neither she nor any other person other than doctors showed up well over 2 hours after the patients have been attended to.
The first non doctors that showed were my brothers Buhari and his elder brother Mamudu (President of Cooperative), then later HOD Pharmacy after all the patients have been stabilized.
Thereafter, other people mostly nurses came but left almost immediately as there was nothing left to be done.
This is not to take anything away from our JOHESU brothers and sisters, but to put the record straight.

U drove thesame official car u have parked at home since the commencement of the JOHESU strike despite being a management staff to the hospital after we finished stabilizing the patients. Were u or any member of ur striking union interviewed by any of TV stations? Are u aware NTA & ITV captured me while saving the lives of these patients and interviewed me thereafter?
