Our leaders don’t have a mind of their own

Large percent of African leaders don’t have the mind of their own; they are only slightly above puppets. They still look to their colonial masters for some critical policy making as it was the same thing that happened to the princes (kings) of Europe who look up to the pope of Rome to carry out certain decisions ( they call it Christendom then we call it names like commonwealth now) e.g. Like a king seeking the consent of pope of Rome before he could opt out of a marriage. Like a king reaching out to the holy pope of Rome before going to war. Except for King Henry VIII of England who later opt out unceremoniously.

Believing medical problems are punishment from God

When we encounter medical problems in Nigeria to an extent Africa, instead of visiting the hospital we love would rather visit a spiritualist or a prophet to help us solve a physical problem in a spiritual way. A case in point is the case of the dreaded Ebola where spiritualist came out en-masse to feed on the ignorance of the people by telling people they’ve got cure to it something a well-funded research center like Centre for disease control (CDC) is still trying to figure out. Yes this was a common attribute of medieval Europe where catholic priest were call to heal people suffering from ordinary illness, and once the priest can’t help the matter they give a superstitious answer to the problem.

A case of jungle justice

In Africa at large, we all still gang up on a supposed thief in delight and watch him trying to rescue himself from the hands of deadly mob, A case in point is the Aluu crisis where innocent student were burnt to death and viewers were there watching and cheering like a cinema premiere. Yes this also is a medieval Europe characteristics , where the people will gather at the square to watch how priest will take condemned heretics to execution ground where they will be burnt just for having unpopular opinion, standing there will be crowd of people cheering the executioner on to carry on.

Witchcraft

In Africa, some parents still victimize their children by accusing them of wizardry and witchcraft and all this is due to ignorance and poverty common around the populace. A case in point is the one about some akwa-ibom kid abandoned by their parent because they are suspected of witchcraft until they were saved by a Danish woman. We all know how it all turned out, the kids are healthy and no sign of witchcraft, maybe the parent were just looking for an avenue to not take up responsibility. Yes this is also a medieval trait where people are condemned for suspicion of witchcraft and they are largely burned when found or sent into the woods to live alone.

Religious leaders are alpha and omegas

In Africa today, we the people still endorse so much power and some invincibility to all these religious leaders that it largely stupefy us and block our sense of reasoning. We exalt religious leaders above our own free thought which is ignorantly irritating. A case in point is a popular pastor in South Africa telling his congregation to eat grass. Something of similar occurrence happened in medieval Europe also, where reverend father are seen as pinnacle of piousness, where religious leaders are given a space for input in decision making, where people see the pope as the face of God on earth, where priest were greeted by kneeling and meant you’re bound to kiss their ring.

Presidential villa and government quarters are fables the masses only hear.

The government as succeeded in building a wall around itself that the masses don’t know what the president villa looks like , all thanks to social media to help the people have a feel of look but you can’t enter except for aristocrats and bourgeois. Such is the thing in medieval Europe also where the people only hear about the king’s court and it’s a privilege to be invited or seen around it except for the aristocrats and kings men. This is different in case of white house where people move around or Downing Street in uk where is just a street around.

Transportation is still a great feat

We still struggle for interstate journey which has slow down the growth of development in the country. Lagos to Maiduguri is a nightmare you don’t want to think about. A case in point is sitting in luxurious bus for long hours which you don’t want to imagine what the stress is like. Again, long distance like this was the thing in medieval Europe where people will spend days using horses in moving from London to York just within same country. We all know how much time will are you from York to London now in Britain.

Women are still being defined by marriage

This last fact takes us back to the norm of medieval Europe. We still largely shape a woman by the ring on her finger or by the Mrs. attached to her name. Women are still being told you are only a woman by the society during a debate. (Sadly, I’m guilty of this also). The only time or place a woman can ever make a point is through her husband or her marriage during the medieval Europe. I won’t give an example to this because I and you know this fact well.

How did Europe move from medieval period to industrial age? One answer is renaissance! We shouldn’t lie to ourselves that something will change soon. For anything to change they must undergo a renaissance, with renaissance comes awareness of potential!
