A man in the U.K. has contracted what is being called the “worst-ever” case of “super-gonorrhea.” This venereal disease appears to be the first instance in which the infection can’t be treated with common antibiotics, according to public health officials.

The man, who has not been named, likely picked up the STI after having sexual contact with a woman in Southeast Asia last year. He apparently began showing symptoms one month later and attended sexual health services in England in early 2018.

Australia’s government also reported two new cases with at least one victim thought to have been infected in southeast Asia.

Experts have warned that there’s a danger that the antibiotic-resistant strains ‘could become untreatable’, IFLScience warned.

Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a combination of the antibiotics azithromycin and ceftriaxone, but the unnamed man had a strain which was resistant to these drugs.

It was eventually treated with a different antibiotic.They are recommending that anyone who contracts the disease be carefully monitored to ensure prompt diagnosis, effective treatment, partner notification and a full screen for sexually transmitted diseases.

Dr Hughes added: ‘PHE actively monitors, and acts on, the spread of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea and potential treatment failures, and has introduced enhanced surveillance to identify and manage resistant strains of infection promptly to help reduce further spread.’

Symptoms include:

Unusually thick, green or yellow discharge from the penis or vagina
Inflammation of the penis or vagina
Pain when urinating
Bleeding between periods

Symptoms usually develop within about two weeks of being infected, although they sometimes don’t appear until many months later.

Worryingly, around 1 in 10 infected men and almost half of infected women don’t experience any symptoms.

If you have any of the symptoms of gonorrhoea, or you’re worried you may have an STI, you should visit your local genitourinary medicine (GUM) or sexual health clinic for a sexual health test.

Gonorrhoea can be easily diagnosed by testing a sample of discharge picked up using a swab. Testing a sample of urine can also be used to diagnose the condition in men.

Undiagnosed Cases

Gonorrhea, a venereal disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria, is an infection that can be spread by sexual contact. During childbirth, it can also be transferred from mothers to babies, where it most commonly effects the eyes.

Most people who contract gonorrhea are asymptomatic, but those who exhibit symptoms experience painful urination, abnormal discharge from sexual organs, or pain around these areas. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to infertility or pelvic inflammatory disease. Once a patient has cured their infection, it’s possible to become reinfected.
