It's always going to be "difficult in practice" when the nation's youth are irresponsible, intoxicated and reckless once they get the power, and are easily blinded or swayed by ethnic considerations instead of merit. Case in point: Look at what is playing out in Kogi state between Gov Bello and Senator Melaye. Both of them represent the youngest of governors and senators in this country. Also, if you're not aware, during the administration of Gabriel Suswam of Benue and Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom as governors respectively, a lot of people - opposition figures and policy critics were killed in these states. I mean a lot... In Akwa Ibom for instance, a Paramount Ruler was even shot and killed in his house and the assailants drove an AKSG vehicle to commit this heinous crime. And this happened while Governor Akpabio often bragged openly that "he is governor of and for the young, not governor of nor for the old." These two guys were among the youngest governors during these times; the immediate past administration. The point I'm making is that Nigerian youth are easily intoxicated with power and they become very reckless with it. If you notice, the Northern part of this country have very old men still running stuff; their governors, senators tend to be old men. It is for this reason. They are conservative and are not convinced that risking political power with the youth is wise for the region. While the Southern part of the country view this as being backward or some sort of unsophistication, recent events and our political history makes that conclusion irresponsible and hasty. Besides, power is never "handed over." It is taken away! The young will take power from the old when the young show that they merit it. As a youth, I support a generational shift when it comes to the political leadership of this country. But, I'm not convinced that we'll be better off if that power shift ends up in the hands of people like Yahaya Bello or Dino Melaye. So, this law is not meant to be a guarantee for young people to attain positions of political leadership. It only opens up the space and makes it possible for them to participate. Oh boy! Make I go run for house of reps or senate, let me start there first. After that governor, then President. |

Eggcelent: I was a bit confused today when he said he would sign the bill with some youths. And I had to ask myself: "What's the essence of signing it whereas he won't step aside for these same young people to take over?" 1 Like |

Sometimes I feel so disappointed that our leaders just look at us and deem all of us dummies by the kind of things they pride themselves of achieving in power.. And to make matters worse, some gullible group of people will join to applaud such show of ignorance and deceit. Eligible age requirements that are already spelt out in our existing constitution are now reported to be presented as a bill and people are just so ignorant not to condemn such waste of privilege and duplicity. Those that are excited by the so-called new bill should try and get a copy of our constitution and check the age qualifications for our elective positions in government. Presidency goes for 40 years and above which the bills seeks to make it 35. So is it the 5 years gap that will guarantee that we have good leadership? I think they should rather make a bill to prohibit political parties to fix their ticket fee for a candidate to be not less than #100k to allow financially average but good intellectual Youths to have the opportunity of picking the candidacy form instead of the #10million fees we have in some political parties. That to me is more meaningful than this age nonsense that still won't guarantee any youths anything. |
