Today Is World's Environment Day by Blackchampion(m): 6:47am On Jun 05, 2018 |
Did you know that today the 5th of June, 2018 is World's Environment Day (WED)? The theme of this year's WED is #BeatPlasticPollution. Though you may not be an Environmentalist by Profession, but you're one by implication of your surroundings. Plastic Pollution, what does it mean? Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, or humans. In Nigeria alone, more than 2 million tonnes of plastic are consumed each year, of which only an estimated 3% are re-used, 10% recycled. The remaining 1.7 million tonnes of waste is disposed of in locally operated dumpsites. This large amount of plastic waste inevitably enters the environment, and become pollutants. WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF PLASTIC WASTES ON THE ENVIRONMENT? 1.) Effects on Land:- Chlorinated plastic can release harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then find its way into the groundwater aquifer or other surrounding water sources and also the ecosystem. This can cause serious harm to the species that drink the water. 2.) Effects on water ways (Drainage systems:- Plastic wastes when not properly disposed can find its way to drainage systems, and reduces the free flow of water. Studies have shown that this act is one of the causes of major flooding in urban settlements. 3.) Effects on Ocean:- In 2012, it was estimated that there was approximately 165 million tons of plastic pollution in the world's oceans. One type of plastic that is of concern in terms of ocean plastic pollution is nurdles (a type of "marine litter", Marine litter, also known as marine debris, is human-created waste that has deliberately or accidentally been released in a lake, sea, ocean or waterway). On Friday 1st June, 2018 in Southern Thailand, a Whale died after vomiting 75 plastic bags. An autopsy conducted on her further shows that about 8kg additional plastics were exhumed from the Whale's stomach. The Negative effects of using plastic far outweighs the merits. IF YOU MUST USE A PLASTIC, BE READY TO RE-USE IT/RECYCLE IT/BIN IT OTHERWISE " REJECT IT". Help #BeatPlasticPollution Happy World's Environment Day . The message is simple: reject single-use plastic. Refuse what you can’t re-use. Together, we can chart a path to a cleaner, greener world. 4 Likes |

With effective awareness, we can make the planet a better place for its inhabitants. Rwanda is currently leading in Africa and it is recognised for its commitment towards a healthier environment which excludes plastic and is very clean. Nigeria can be like that too, we just need to work harder and keep sensitising the public and our families about the need for a better, cleaner and safer environment. 1 Like |

If you can't reuse it,refuse it. Commitment is required from stakeholder to actualize this:individuals, ministry of environment, waste management companies etc. Together we can achieve a cleaner world. |

About 60% of the solid wastes generated in Nigeria are plastics. Note: statistics is my opinion different methods are adopted by users to dispose or destroy them, ranging from burning to disposing off on the street among many other methods. Burning of plastics generates air pollutants which has carcinogenic properties. in Nigeria, even locust beans that used to be packed in leaves are now packed with plastic. everyone wants to be honoured with a plastic bag even after buying a sachet of water possessing double plastic. then how are we coming out of this? As we celebrate world environment day today, REMEMBER NYLON IS NOT AN HONOUR BUT A DISHONOUR TO OUR ENVIRONMENT NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. 1 Like |

Plastic debris consumed by fishes is also likely to find its way into the tissues of our bodies when we consume those fishes. #BeatPlasticPollution 1 Like |
