The Chairman of First Bank Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, and itsMangaging director, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, has been convicted by the Federal High Court in Lagos of contempt.

They were charged to court for contempt by the Ejama-Ebubu community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State and the bank was found guilty of refusing to release N122 billion judgement debt against Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). The bond is in respect of the judgment debt against SPDC in an oil spill suit filed by the community.

Yesterday, Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos, dismissed their preliminary objection to a contempt charge filed against them by the Ejama-Ebubu community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State and suspended the sentencing for three months to enable the bank and its officials to purge themselves of the contempt. The The judge stated that, if by September 6 the convicts failed to purge themselves of the contempt proceedings, they would immediately go to prison.
