The defendant was arrested by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after intelligence linked him to suspicious internet fraud activities around the Karji area of the state.

Justice A. A. Bello of the Kaduna State High Court sitting in Kaduna has convicted one Nnamdi Orji Innocent, aka Christian Dominic Allen on one count bordering on cybercrime.

The defendant was arrested by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after intelligence linked him to suspicious internet fraud activities around the Karji area of the state.

Upon his arrest, the defendant confessed to having created a Google chat account with his iPhone 11, using the identities of one Christian Dominic Allen, Hobson Lunsford and Genero Westpal in chatting with his foreign victims and receiving a gift card worth two hundred dollars ($200), Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The one count reads: “That you, Nnamdi Orji Innocent (aka Christian Dominic Allen) sometime in April 2023 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence, to wit; falsely presented yourself as Christian Dominic Allen in that assumed character cheated one Yasha the total sum of $200 USD and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under Section 309 of the same law.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Justice Bello convicted him but gave him the option of paying a fine of N100,000.00.

He is also to forfeit an Apple iPhone 11, Sanyi Sound System and Skyrun Refrigerator.

The convict has restituted the sum of $200 (Two Hundred USD) to the victim through the EFCC.

No Nigerian politician is in prison. Does it means they are not stealing money?

I'm a Nigerian and I was about y years old (find x)when the word 419 became Nigeria's trade mark. Over the years I've been trying to get into the thinking mind of the scammer and the scammed (pardon those titles). It has dawned on me that it all started with what I'll term using the sympathy angle to defraud. It happens even in Nigerian streets. Practically healthy people tell you one compelling story and you fall for it out of sympathy. They scam you alright.

Why is it widespread? Nigeria is a copy cat nation full of lazy people. Criminals are boasters and when they spend their ill gotten proceeds, majority of people who know them also want in on it. That way, the scam increases. Flamboyant lifestyle by politicians and religious leaders is not helping matters too. You see your classmate who was always at the bottom of the class, without any known business, spending money as if its source never dries up, relatives and friends berate you for being ‘lazy' because you are not like this your classmate. In Nigeria, your source of money doesn't matter. A known armed robber will be given countless titles, if he can afford it.

I won't doubt that scamming is now synonymous with Nigeria. The sad truth is that only the sly and underhand live big in my country. Those who are genuinely rich are about 1% of the population. If you held government office or travelled abroad and came back to Nigeria without lots of money, your community will ostracize you forever. That's the bitter truth.
