The Sins Buhari Condemned As An Aspirant But Commits As President

Before his emergence in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari was perceived as a saint and stood in the position where he made assessments of previous presidents, commenting on who is right and wrong, who has done well and who has not. Little did he know that a time would come when he would sit in a position where he will also be authorised to make decisions and act, but in the long run, would be judged by others watching from the outside just like he did. While being an aspirant to the seat of Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Buhari was known to have condemned those sitting in areas of governance, handling of the downstream sector (subsidy), the strength of the naira and most importantly, corruption. The reality on the ground reveals that Buhari is now guilty as those he accused, now that he sits on the seat of power.

Insecurity: Buhari had criticised President Jonathan’s administration especially in the case of the 276 Chibok girls kidnap and Boko Haram insurgency but a similar situation happened under his administration where about 110 schoolgirls were kidnapped by the same terrorist group at Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, Yobe State. Moreso, under the Buhari administration, Fulani herdsmen were rated the fourth deadliest terrorist group in the world as they have so far killed about 5000 Nigerians.

Subsidy Removal: Another sensitive sin Buhari has committed is the removal of subsidy, having once criticised and fought against it under former President Goodluck Jonathan in January 2012. “Nigerians are being deceived on the issue of fuel subsidy. I am completely opposed to the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. “Fuel subsidy does not exist…” Buhari clearly mentioned while being a member of the opposition, CPC in 2011. Few years after such criticism, Buhari through his Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, announced the removal of subsidy on petrol, which automatically means that it will now be sold for N145/litre as against the former N86.50.

Strength Of The Naira: Buhari, during the South-East presidential rally of the party at Dan Anyima Stadium, Owerri, said “It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than N230 to one dollar; this does not speak well for the nation’s economy,’’ boasting to equal the local currency to the greenback. The reality is here to speak for itself as Nigerians bought the dollar at the rate of over N400.

Corruption: The top agenda on the President Buhari’s list for his administration is the fight against corruption which was bought by the international community. “We shall strongly battle another form of evil that is even worse than terrorism—the evil of corruption.” he had said. However, the latest corruption perception index (CPI) released by Transparency International (TI) in 2018 revealed that corruption grew dramatically under the Buhari administration. While the country scored 27/100 and was ranked 136th in 2016, the latest CPI scores Nigeria 28/100 but with a rank of No. 148 out of 180 countries surveyed — a significant 12 places below where it was the previous year.

He is trying but has not done enough. I believed his attempt is better than doing nothing. You and I know that if he can stop this herdsmen killing, we will not complain about this government.
For now, I can say you are excellently right in some of your points.

Only those who don't know him before then will be disappointed in the failure of a president.
