Kogi State Governor, Alh. Yahaya Bello has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, saying the declaration is “further demonstration of the President’s commitment to democracy”. The Governor stated this in a statement through his Director General of Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, applauding the President for identifying with the “iconic date that religious bigotry and ethnic bias were defeated in our body polity”. The statement reads: “On June 12, 1993, I was part of a generation of young Nigerians that witnessed the betrayal of the voices of our people against the iconic date that ethnic divisions and religious bigotry were defeated in our political life. “The late MKO Abiola who was a renowned Moslem floated a Presidential ticket with another Moslem, Alh. Babagana Kingibe. Nigerians ignored those interests and chose a united Nigeria. “The annulment of that historic poll sparked a chain of events and our father, MKO Abiola died in the process, giving birth to the democracy we all enjoy today. “Administrations after that did little to give a badge of respect to June 12, despite being the tree that bear the democratic fruits we enjoy today. But President Muhammadu Buhari has dared to be different and bowed to the wishes of Nigerians to set aside the date to celebrate our freedom from dictatorship. “This has gone a long way to position Mr President as a defender of democracy, a defender of common good and a defender of freedom”. The Governor said the declaration has opened “another democratic page” in the political history of Nigeria. In a related development, Governor Yahaya Bello has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to remain “undaunted” as “enemies of democracy” threaten to halt his fight against corruption and criminality, saying Nigerians are “solidly behind the President in the battle to save the nation from the clutches of corruption and violence”. “When people want to impeach the President because he is fighting corruption and insecurity, they will know that some of the people leading this nation are retrogressive. “Corruption and violence are the enemies of the poor and defenseless which the President has sworn to protect. Nigerians are monitoring developments in the country and they are comfortable with Mr President. “The rule of law is there to protect the innocent but the law doesn’t recognize names or positions. It doesn’t recognize status. President Buhari has proven his courage to ensure the practice of equality before the law”.
