What do you expect, Bashir Tofa's running mate was an Igbo man from Mbaise in Imo state; Sylvester Ugoh, the former governor of Central Bank of Biafra smiley

Igbo divided Nigeria. They hate anything Yoruba and this showed in the 1993 Election.

Except Anambra, all Eastern stated Voted against Abiola. What division is more than that?

Truly Abiola was actually the presumed winner. But I hate the fact that people still refer to this election as free and fair election ever. Big lie! In my place in Akoko-Edo local govt, the election was well rigged in favour of Abiola and being a money politician money exchange hands.

What was your age in 1993?

Participating in elections now is an issue. Kwara did better than Lagos. Lagos has the population but when it comes to election day, it fizzles out. Even for recent governorship elections, check out the numbers. There's a lot of noise made but you don't see them on election day.
Because people are giving up on the country. Some of those people who registered and did not go out to vote are of the opinion that no matter the candidate it will always be business as usual, so what is the essence of going out out to vote?
But in the North because of the poverty level, just give the Almajiris small change they will vote without hesitation

Very fair election.

No Landslide victory.

Even where Abiola or TOFA lost, the votes were well spread.

A Muslim-Christain ticket could have easily won the election.

But majority of Nigerians preferred a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Abiola defeated Bashir Tofa in his State,KANO!!!!

Its worthy to see the voting pattern and see there was no ethnic pattern in the voting. People voted out of conviction more.

You're correct. Political consciousness may just be a sophisticated way of expressing opinions without actions. There is a realisation that numbers do the work and that's what matters with the results. Take a look at uncollected PVCs data released by INEC. It will tslus something too.

Well...I would have viewed it that way....but for that 93 election...Abiola was the general choice...so I don't really see it romr a tribal angle on the part of the south westerners...

If the northerners saw Abiola and voted for him based on qualities alot of other pple from other zones probably did the same....the easterners had their reasons for voting Tofa..he was their choice.
Those were the days of real manifestos, and real campaign, not these stomach infrastructure paroles done now, political stunt and evil media manipulation, using heards men and bokoharam news to discredit opponent..

Have u been to the north?? not the north the media lie to u about...
I must tell u they are one of the most wonderful pple in Nigeria..the only problem with them is...don't strike them first....they will respond a ten times tougher.

They have one voice, their rich pple sit with them on the street and buy food to eat togeda...they knock each others doors on Friday to come out and delibrately on local issues togeda after jumat
.yes their standard of living may be a bit low...but they take care about each other...how many times have u seen an Hausa man take cocaine abroad, or an Hausa man travelling to the US or UK saying he wants to stay, looking for a way to do sham marriage or live with expired papers??

They take care of each other, the average Hausa man is an active alumni of his street, neighbourhood, town and so on...
u see an northerner travel a broad for MSc or phd, his fellow predecessors have already gotten a job for him before he left Nigeria. See an ordinary herds man, he has a small transistor radio listening to news of how their place will grow and develop.
That's the reason they vote for them selves not because someone gave them small change.

No sir, the bulk stopped at his table. He wanted to be a life president until Yardua begged Abiola to save the nation from the Gap toothed monster.

Before 1993, Babangida has already paved way for Abacha.

I still think that an element of "Its our Son" hanged around via out the 1993 election....in as much as it was the freest since Nigeria's history, u can not take away the lingering stench of tribalism or lets be more euphemistic....LETS VOTE ONLY FOR OUR SON....thing going on in the SW.

I mean its too obvious

the divisiveness existed a long time ago, just that it rises clearly off the murky waters of 'pretentious nationalism' at this time...Buhari's 2017-18

Tofa's running mate was from the east. Abiola's running mate was from the North so they were able to battle Tofa for the votes there

Flintstone06:
Interesting how Tofa won some core south eastern states and Abiola also won some core northern states.

We are definitely more divided now as a country than ever before. sad

Divisiveness will always be brought in by those who want to. What about Tofa and those who say Yoruba Muslims? For Nigerian elections, the elections in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd republic tell us some things.

Have never been to the North, but from my little interaction with them, I know the Hausa cherish themselves.
I did not say the North or the Hausa's, I said the Almajiri
