Former governor of Plateau state, Joshua Dariye, has queried the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if there is any saint in Nigeria - Dariye asked the question when EFCC's counsel was urging the court to impose the maximum sentence on him to serve as deterrent - He also asked the counsel not destroy tomorrow because of today Senator Joshua Dariye who is also a former governor of Plateau state, has on Tuesday, June 12, asked Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if there is any saint in Nigeria. The former governor asked this when the prosecution counsel was urging the court to impose the maximum sentence to serve as deterrent, Daily Trust reports. While the EFCC was urging the court for maximum sentence, Dariye reportedly signified to the court that he wanted to say something. When he was given the opportunity to speak, Dariye angrily reacted to Jacobs submission that he didn’t show any remorse. Let us not spoil tomorrow because of today. Can you raise your hand to swear there is a saint in Nigeria?” Eventually, Dariye was found guilty for a N1.16bn fraud and for criminal breach of trust. In addition, he was jailed two years for misappropriation of public funds. Both sentences will run concurrently. Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Federal Capital Territory High court, before whom he stood trial for a 23-count amended charge, found him guilty of 15 of the counts bordering on criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds. He was discharged on eight of the counts.
