The Niger State Government has revoked all the licences issued to liquor dealers throughout the state.

The Niger State Liquor Licensing Board, the body charged with the responsibility of regulating the sale and consumption of alcohol, announced this in a statement signed by its chairman, Malam Muhammad Shafii.

The state government had in 2000 introduced the Sharia legal system in the state under which sale and consumption of alcohol and related beverages in restricted areas of major town and cities in the state were prohibited.

Under the law, the sale and consumption of alcohol are restricted to eight kilometres from each of the city centre.

But in a U-turn on Monday, the state government banned the outright sale and consumption of alcohol in any part of the state.

In the statement in Minna, Shafii said liquor vendors caught contravening the order would not only be arrested but prosecuted.

The statement asked law enforcement agents to implement the directive by arresting and prosecuting offenders.

To give vent to the new policy, two major liquor dealers in the state were arrested over the weekend and would be charged to court soon.

In the same manner, operatives of the board also recently seized and destroyed N28 million worth of assorted liquor in Minna.

Not only VAT, but also consider that all the cereals used in brewing comes from the North. Their farmers benefit directly from the brewers.

Bunch of hypocrites... Little wonder Ur youths and women get high on any alternative means... D annoying part is since dey claim alcohol is haram, why not stay away from it and let those who see no wrong in it take it? Considering most of residents of d major towns of d state (bida, Suleja, minna and d rest) have a gud number of Christians and other ethnic groups why impose sharia on dem since Sharia is supposed to b binding on only Muslims?

Muslim-dominated states can make laws banning the sale of alcohol but christian-dominated states are told not to make laws banning open cattle grazing. Wonderful!

I have said it many times that the military should just take over. Religion and democracy are miles apart. They are the most incompatible in the lot.
Imagine they want to rule and lord over even those who do not share their hypocrisy with them.
Yeye dey smell aswear.

These muslim-dominated states have established a parallel law enforcement agency aka sharia police to enforce their sharia laws and our conventional police, military, DSS have all looked the other way but when Benue state established a Livestock police to enforce their anti-grazing law, they were swooped upon, disarmed and disbanded! I now see the sense in the call for all states in the SE and SS to enact anti-grazing laws without any further delay because it looks like the fulani herdsmen carrying out the orchestrated killings in the middie-belt are emboldened by the fact that other christian states in the south have not shown solidarity with Benue by enacting similar laws.
