They say he is a senator.... paid by Nigeria, ' so how can he support a secessionist movement'... Folks, there lies the root of the problem, infact all problems facing Nigeria. And even Nigerians donot know how democracy works and how a sound functional one brings unity and prosperity to a nation.

First and foremost the Senator is a 'representative of his people', elected by them to protect and uphold their interests within the structure of this country at the highest levels. So arresting him for expressing his view and actions on any matter is equal to arresting his entire constituents. This is not surprising but cleaely shows the nation is not ready to accept, tolerate or accomoate opposing views because if any debate arises it is he who will stand for them before the country.

Senator Abaribe has no choice in this matter. He has done his duty to his people as specified by law and no other individual or section can fault him on that. If the government begins to arrest representatives of the people it sets the closure of the last opportunities for dialogue and in motion the tendency for the Executive to effectively stiffle the second arm of government which has direct links with the governed aka dictatorship.

Folks who laud this today should realise first of all that the House of Assembly has enough mechanisms to correct and reprimand erring members when found wanting. The foray of the Executive into what should be internal matters undermines the power structute of 'Nigerians'.

And I will always say this. When institutions are weakened, it is the average Nigerian that picks the bill for reconstruction. It might seem right to some, the action of the present government but the facts are, that governments and agendas and movements and politicians come and go, but institutions remain. And the institutions you may have contributed to destroy today aill not provide a shelter for you when matters of your interest arise tomorrow.

That is why we often rise above issues to examine the fundamentals and often arrive at the conclusion that Nigeria needs to be restructured. After the Good Friday peace accord there have been seperatist Northern Ireland members of Parliament. Even volatile Catalonia has members in the Spanish parliament who openly and vocally support and advocate for independence at every opportunity yet are not hounded and arrested like ordinary criminals.

I don't know of any House Member from the east who does this yet the Federal Government is on edge typically trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. It is just not wise.

And before I forget about who pays who, this is another reason I have often said that the House of Assembly should be run directly by the people. People should pay their representatives so as to do the job they are sent to do. A man owes allegiance to who pays for his services and a situatuon where the Executive holds the purse strings in the power equation makes it impossible for the 'dividends' of democracy to come. Either the funding laws are changed or the custodial laws of the nations resources are changed so that like in United States, the Treasury becomes the defacto fourth arm of government totally independent of the governing arms.

Question now is; why arrest a man that has a court case of the same issue four days from the day of arrest?
